Rethinking Tape: Build a resilient data protection and reliable long-term retention strategy
Is tape backup dead? The rise of cyber threats has led to a long list of requirements for creating a business continuity plan. However, tape is not dead; many companies still use it to meet regulatory audits. In our view, tape has not lost its value; it has simply been mispositioned. Its strengths lie in its durability, cost efficiency, and offline storage, which make it ideal for long-term retention. The real challenge for organizations today is how to reposition tapes within a modern data protection architecture. Tapes should complement, rather than compete with, modern backup solutions. Updated role for tapes:

Relying on tape backups in 2026 isn’t enough to build your cyber resilience
As cyber threats intensify and business downtime becomes increasingly costly, enterprises are rethinking how their data protection strategies fit into their cyber resilience planning. Under Safe Harbor (Cyber Recovery) principles, the focus has shifted toward one core question: can critical data still be trusted and restored when everything else fails? Backups are no longer just about storing copies of your data. It’s about ensuring those copies remain intact, verifiable, and recoverable fast enough to sustain operations. Tape once played a critical role thanks to its low cost and offline nature. But as data volumes grow and recovery expectations rise, its

Choosing the right AI model for work
AI assistants have quietly become part of the default workday. They draft replies, summarize long email threads, translate content for global teams, and turn rough notes into something you'd actually send. But "which model is best?" is surprisingly hard to answer in a way that reflects real work. Brand perception, UI differences, and one bad interaction can skew opinions fast. So we ran a small internal experiment. Over four weeks, Synology employees around the world used AI features inside Synology Office and MailPlus, our Synology Office Suite that lets organizations connect their own choice of LLM while keeping content private

Empowering MSPs to deliver Compliance as a Service with ActiveProtect
For MSPs looking to stand out, providing Compliance as a Service (CaaS) might be the key. A survey by MSP Success shows that 73% of MSPs have seen increased demands for compliance services. Yet, most MSPs are struggling to keep up. Take GDPR and SOC 2 as examples: GDPR emphasizes strengthening data privacy and security for individuals in the EU, but only 32% of MSPs meet GDPR requirements; SOC 2 focuses on safeguarding customer data through ongoing, audit controls. Only 15.5% of MSPs comply, according to Infrascale. For MSPs that keep up, compliance sets them apart. However, delivering Compliance as

Reflecting on 2025 and rethinking the future of cyber resilience in 2026
As we begin the new year, let’s take some time to reflect on 2025 and take a look at the year ahead. In 2025, businesses faced a wide range of challenges related to data protection, especially IT teams responsible for safeguarding corporate data. As market trends leaned towards strategies such as the 3-2-1-1-0 backup policy and disaster recovery to cyber recovery (DR to CR) methods, we introduced Synology ActiveProtect in 2025 as a way for businesses to consolidate and simplify data protection. ActiveProtect is an integrated, purpose-built backup appliance that unifies data management, security, and scalability so that businesses can

A major leap in camera compatibility
Josh Lin, Director of Video Surveillance solutions at Synology, explains how Surveillance Station 9.2.5 marks a major milestone, with a significant jump from 8,900 to more than 17,000 supported cameras. Video surveillance systems rarely start from a blank page. Today, most organizations already have cameras deployed to protect workplaces, retail locations, warehouses. As they scale, additional compliance and security requirements follow. That’s often when the limits of traditional, rigid video surveillance architectures show up, especially when it’s time to expand, modernize, or merge data across multiple sites. Camera Compatibility Yes, we make cameras too. Synology cameras are designed to work

Time for MSPs to rethink Microsoft 365 backup to protect better and earn smarter
As businesses increasingly move workloads to the cloud, more organizations are realizing the importance of protecting cloud data. In fact, according to Infrascale, 76% of MSPs in the U.S. now focus on backing up cloud applications for their clients. Among these, Microsoft 365 remains the most common service customers rely on MSPs to protect. Today, most MSPs have already deployed established Microsoft 365 backup solutions for their clients. These solutions generally cover the basics, yet often lack the depth MSPs need and come with higher overall costs. It’s time to rethink whether your current Microsoft 365 backup is truly helping

Celebrating 10 Years of Productivity
Authored by Rex Huang, Director at Synology Enterprise Application Group behind solutions such as Synology Drive, Office, MailPlus, Calendar, and Chat. It’s been ten years since we first released what would become Synology Office. Back in 2015, the package launched as Spreadsheet, a real-time collaborative spreadsheet tool. As part of DSM 6.0, we soon added documents and then slides, and the suite evolved into what you know today as Synology Office. Since then, we’ve been steadily adding capabilities: new formulas, pivot tables, APIs, AI integration, and dozens of smaller enhancements. Through it all, we’ve stayed true to the original promise:

How safety monitoring will drive major manufacturing efficiency gains
Manufacturers worldwide are experiencing an unprecedented workforce crisis. In 2025, ManpowerGroup reported that up to 74% of businesses globally were unable to fill open positions, the highest level in recent years. Despite these shortages, it might seem surprising given the strong push toward automation and digital transformation. According to McKinsey, 88% of organizations report regular AI use in at least one business function, up from 78% a year earlier, yet nearly two-thirds are still experimenting or piloting and only about one-third have begun to scale AI across the enterprise. However, not all manufacturing roles can be automated quickly or cost-effectively.
