The future for data management, hybrid-cloud, and more
Synology introduced an entirely redesigned DiskStation Manager (DSM) in the online event, 2021 AND BEYOND. DSM is the unified operating system powering Synology data management solutions, and version 7.0 brings new technologies for storage, backup, and hybrid cloud. "Unprecedented quantities of data have undergone processing, whether for data analytics, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, telemedicine, or for countless more innovations. All of this is making a huge impact on our lifestyle and the way we do business, forming a "data economy" where owning more data gives you a competitive edge against others," said Philip Wong, Synology founder and Chief Executive
CloudProductivityStorageSurveillanceRecapReliability
A quick look back at 2019
One of our most important goals in 2019 was “reliability.” To get there, we changed many of our internal development policies and methods. Let’s take a brief look back at what we did, and a sneak peek at what's coming in 2020. DSM We made eight releases1 in 2019, a significantly lower amount than in previous years. It isn’t a sign that we’re slowing down development but instead reflects our new focus on reliability. We adopted a slower update cadence to allow more time for additional rounds of internal testing. Stages a typical DSM update goes through: Automated In-Development Testing

Building a 3D render farm with Synology
A robust, cost-efficient platform for 3D professionals “Storage used to play a secondary role in high-performance computing (HPC) environments, and yet it has a critical role to play in the field of cloud-based 3D rendering and image processing,” said Dr. Kuo, a researcher in the National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC) in Taiwan. With the rise of 3D trends, high-end CPUs alone can no longer meet the demands of independent artists and production companies. 3D rendering requires more computing power from the GPU, along with massive storage and stronger throughput performance. Though the mission is to become an internationally renowned HPC center

Hyper Backup encryption technologies explained
How AES and RSA work together to protect C2 backup data You cannot be too careful when it comes to protecting your valuable assets. Suppose you have a collection of precious heirloom jewelry. You put it in a jewelry box with a lock to protect against theft. But it’s simply not safe enough, so you turn to a bank and store your jewels in a safe deposit box securely kept in a vault for extra protection and peace of mind. We value data confidentiality as much as you value your valuables. That’s why we employ AES-256 and RSA-2048 encryption technologies

Maybe you shouldn’t be that concerned about data durability
Even 11 nines are not immune to human error With more businesses moving their mission-critical data to the cloud, it is essential that the cloud platform delivers high levels of availability and durability, making sure your data remains accessible and intact whenever you need it. “Designed to provide 99.999999999% durability and 99.99% availability of objects over a given year.” Amazon S3 quotes the number of nines (“9s”) as the metrics for the level of data protection and operational performance. Yet there seems to be an arms race going on among major cloud providers with each trying to reach as many

How data scrubbing protects against data corruption
Small steps to big protection for your storage Data scrubbing, as the name suggests, is a process of inspecting volumes and modifying the detected inconsistencies. As times goes by, some data may fall victim to slow degradation that gradually deteriorates data integrity. Worse still, they occur silently without any warning. Take photos as an example. It could be a real disaster if it happens to one of your precious photos capturing the indelible memories. The two images below are the original photo and the corrupt one that suffers from bit rot. Read on to see how data scrubbing prevents your

3 hidden costs to watch out for when purchasing a backup solution
Have you been tasked with finding and comparing different backup solutions, only to become overwhelmed with various options, an avalanche of features, and abundant licensing models from the very start? If you’re looking for a backup solution, this post will hopefully give you some insight and help you steer clear of the potential pricing pitfalls. To begin with, there are two types of business models in the backup market: Backup hardware & backup software sold separately All-in-one integrated backup appliance For most companies, one of the major reasons they simply purchase backup software is that they can leverage their existing

Reduce IT effort with centralized data backup
And save yourself a headache There’s no short answer to the question “Where do you keep your data?” These days, business data is scattered across multiple platforms and devices, from servers to virtual machines, personal computers and cloud applications like Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. For IT and data managers, this presents several conundrums. To ensure that your data is secure, every device and platform needs to be backed up. However, since all those different platforms might be compatible with specific backup solutions, you might be forced to integrate multiple products from separate vendors, which leads to greater complexity –

Seamlessly access between Synology NAS and G Suite service by tapping into LDAP in Google Cloud Identity
A growing trend towards putting directory service onto the cloud as a unified cloud-based AD/LDAP is allowing IT admins to manage cloud and on-premises servers efficiently and flexibly. As more and more clients are adopting hybrid cloud infrastructure to store and manage their data, Google Cloud Identity therefore made a forward-thinking move by creating a brand new feature called Secure LDAP. This new feature can also integrate user accounts seamlessly to allow Synology NAS to form closer ties with Google Cloud Identity and G Suite in addition to exchanging data. With Secure LDAP offered through Cloud Identity and G Suite, Google
