Hi everyone! I’m Erica from the Marketing team. I’d like to share an idea with you: the personal cloud. We all know how popular the term “cloud” is and how companies are using the term to make their products sound tech-savvy. But if you think this is only for big companies, then think again. Because even you can host a cloud, right at home.
Why bother? Well, considering the fact that we are overwhelmed by the different IT devices, personal cloud is a much better way to share and store files easily. If you are a PC guy, chances are that you’ll always be your friends’ last resort when dealing with their home electronic equipments. So a sunny weekend afternoon could be spent at a friend’s place, trying to get that 1080p concert video that’s stored in his laptop to be played out on his DLNA TV.
Or, if you happened to be a Groupon fan, you’d probably understand the inconveniences of not being able to print out the purchase proof right after placing the order on you smartphone. Because you still need to go to a PC, log into Groupon, and print – Not convenient.
I’m sure we have all run into similar situations like these. This is why a personal cloud may be the way to go. Having a personal cloud means that you and friends can get the files anywhere, and have the files shared on multiple devices. Things like printing out an online coupon with AirPrint, or preview documents on NAS server with Google Docs, or even streaming concert video to TV all become possible when you have a personal cloud. Personally, I think the best part is that you can have it all in one place. It saves you the trouble of going to different providers for the various services you wish to use. If this sounds a bit too blurry and hard to understand, I think our new video, Be Your Own Cloud, did a great job in telling the story.
Hi, thanks for great video
But isn’t Google print feature not released yet?
Hmmm..”and smartphones”, well synology still don´t have managed to make a mobile webb interface so therefore for example it is extremely hard to stream music (for example) with Audiostation to Nokia Symbian 3 Anna Phones.
I think actually you immediately should make this possible for Nokia phones (still a huge player in smartphones) and so will be 4ever.
All the blackberry users are also left out.
Why this focusing all
-in on google and apple? I don´t want to have androids 1/10-malware apps in my personal phone.
This hysterical app-years is insane. Make it work by logging in flawlessly. I realt don´t think this app-hysteria is going to continue.
Just do it!
I love the box, but between Google doc’s and video not working over HTTPS I wish there was more attention paid to the people that properly secure their machines.
This is exactly how I use my Synology. If Synology adds more functionality for instance for streaming video, that would be cool.
And I second @Lance: all apps and functionality should work with my own SSL certificate and not only the preset one from Synology.
How about a spam-filter, or a human moderator on this blog?
Honestly
the biggest challenge is to Sync all important data you need every day on several Devices on different Platforms.
How to Sync
- Contacts (with Photos, and sorted in Groups, Addressed with tags, Equipped with notes),
- Dates (also repeating in several Calendars)
- E-Mails (received and sent, with Filters and Rules!)
- Notes, Text, Photo, Speech, Video
- Tasks and To-do’s
With Windows 7, Mac osX, Outlook, Thunderbird, Mail, iPhone, Android and so on…
just seems to be impossible
I want an Open Exchange Server on the Diskstation. Want to keep control of my Data and not giving them to Microsoft, Google or Apple.

In the article mention Groupon, what the hell is going on?
that can´t be especially important at all. Gosh.
you are right about the open serer solution.
I have solved it by using Tjunderbird and syncing with my Nokia E6 and ovisuite by the way.
For the calender and todo and notes I am using Funambol..over the air and it is syncing all the folders to and from my Nokia E6, two computers (Windows 7) with Outlook 2010 and also Thunderbird. So I basically have the sae informatio on every device I use.
It works but I have nu rules and filters on my folders.
I think Synology could make som effort on this area. Indeed some effort…many people are struggling with these things.
A client that I think would be nice for many is Zimbra as a poackage for easy installment on the NAS. In that way you coulk left Microsoft behind. For documents, such as word, excel, powerpoint, access use Open Office.
So far I’m pleased with the DSM 3.2 upgrade on my DS1511+. However, I was disappointed with its support for Google Cloud Print. I currently have three network printers at home serving 8 PCs and 2 MacbookPros. I have one old laptop running W7 to serve as my Google Cloud Print Server so I can print to any of those three printers from my iPhone/laptops remotely. I was hoping with the 3.2 upgrade I could re-purpose the laptop for other use, but looks like I still need to continue using it for my Google Cloud Printing.
I wonder if next DSM update is going to allow me to retire my old laptop server?
