Hi, I’m Jeremie and have recently joined Synology and its Product Management team. I’ll be working on the mobile apps and will be looking forward to sharing on them in this blog.
There couldn’t be a better time for a first post than the release of DSM 4.1 Beta last week, and with it a whole string of new features and functionalities. And one area where DSM 4.1 is going to continue strengthening the Synology brand is on the possibilities it offers users to transform their DiskStation into a complete Media center.
So what’s new? There’s one key application I’d like to talk about with you today: the new Video Station. If like me, your DiskStation was not a “x86″ model capable of running Plex Media Server, you have probably been longing for Video Station. True, Photo Station and DS photo could play videos, but managing a whole collection of movies quickly became cumbersome if you had to create folders and organize your movies yourself… Not to mention the need to transcode certain formats before playing them.
Smart app, smart functions:
Video Station isn’t just an app dedicated to playing and managing your video collection, it’s a smart one which allows you to focus on enjoying movies, not organizing them. And, we’re not releasing it alone: its sister app for mobile devices, DS video, is coming up very soon on iPad, iPhone as well as iPod Touch so your collection can be accessed form wherever you want.
The main difficulty with a large collection of movies is making it easy to retrieve a movie anytime you need it. To do that, you need to have the right info about the movie to make searches quick and productive: title, director’s name, year of release… not simple if you have more than 100 movies and TV shows in your collection. Video Station just takes care of that: it automatically searches for all this information online and updates your video files accordingly. And if ever you realize the information isn’t correct, it’s always possible to use your own key words to perform the search and choose the correct film if more than one option shows up.
Another smart feature is the Digital TV module, which allows to record and stream programs broadcasted in DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial standard). We all get addicted to a TV show every now and then, and would not miss an episode for all the riches on Earth! Now if you’ve ever thought it would be cool to set up a recording schedule and store the TV show straight into the video library of your DiskStation, Video Station is just what you need. All you need is a Digital TV tuner plugged into your DiskStation: scan for your local channels, and simply add the programs you want to record to your recording schedule! But what makes this “Recorded TV” really special is that it’s available on DS video: you didn’t expect this 2 hour meeting with your team and will be getting off work late tonight? Just log in to DS video on your iPhone, check the TV program list and add a recording task to the schedule.
One last exciting feature part of the DTV module: streaming programs directly so Video Station becomes a real TV set (streaming is available on x86-DiskStation models). By selecting the streaming mode, Video Station provides the url to stream… which can be pasted into a an external player such as VLC. This last step is the only drawback right now, but you can be sure we’re working on this so streaming and recording can be all done from the Video Station interface.
What next?
There are some features I’m keen on seeing in the future and which I believe will make Video Station and DS video really smart apps. One is helping me keep track of what I’ve watched, and what I still need to watch! I started the Prison break series once, went through the first two seasons religiously, less so for the last two seasons: now I have no idea which episodes I watched. I’ll be eager to see this feature in the next version of Video Station/DS video. In a similar way, if I exit a movie before the end, I’d love DS video to memorize where I stopped. Not a catastrophe, but a small detail that will make things smoother.
What about Plex Media Server?
As mentioned above, some of our DiskStations can run Plex Media Server, which is similar in many ways to Video Station, but is developed by a 3rd party: Plex. You can actually read my colleague Darren’s excellent article introducing this app. If ever you were wondering, we’re in no way trying to start a competition with Plex by launching our Video Station: each package has its own strengths and advantages, and we consider that 2 different offers can only be positive for you Synology users. More proof of this is that we are working with them to provide the Plex package on all DiskStations (ARM-supported package).
That’s all for now, but I’ll be looking forward to your feedback on our new Video Station and DS video, as well as another blog later on to introduce more of our new apps.
Great news, I’m really looking forward to the final release.
And the obvious questions are:
a) will you support more DVB-T sticks (like e.g. the popular Elgato series)
b) how about DVB-S/S2? It’s basically the same, isn’t it?
Video Station is exactly what I have been looking for to use with my iPad and later Apple tv. Very keen to be in the beta release. Professionally I am involved in validation of embedded firmware devices.
Hi Jeremie! This application is what I’m looking forward the most on DSM 4.1!
Especially the Live TV and Recording.
Like Valen, I would also like to see some work between Synology and Elgato to support their products.Their DVB-T sticks are pretty famous and good. DVB-C and DVB-S should be too difficult I would think to support either, so I’m adding my request to support those as well.
Also, I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere. Do you support both the MPEG-2 and H264 codecs for DVB-T? We addopted H264 over here, I’m just making sure it works!
Regarding the Library Mode, I already use Plex and I’m pretty happy with it, but if I may have some input here it goes:
- As far as saving the watched/unwatched status for movies and episodes, I suggest integration with Trakt.tv. There are basically two-parts of their service: 2-way synching the watched status (hourly, daily, etc) so that DS Video keeps in sync in case we watched an episode somewhere else and mark it as watched on trakt and vice-versa. Scrobbing is also a part of the service which tells trakt when we are currently watching something (when the episode/movies reaches 80/90%, it marks it as completely watched). I think this could be a great integration.
- If the video has a codec supported by the device but the container isn’t (for example H264 inside MKV), is the video passed-trough or is it transcoded as well? Same question for audio.
Apple announced that external subtitles will be supported on the next iOS 6 so it would be great if you could support those.
- Are external subtitles (SRT) supported? If not I’m requesting it
All the best.
Couldn’t be happier with my synology product!
Hi,
-we do plan to support more dongles for the final release of DSM 4.1.
Right now we are collecting users’ feedback and requests and have started testing, so I can’t tell you yet which models exactly will be supported for the final release.
-MPEG-2 and H264 are supported for DVB-T.
-If a codec supported by the device but the container not: in this Beta version, it is transcoded. For the final release, remuxing will be suppported.
-External subtitles aren’t supported in this Beta release, but will be in the final version.
Hi Jeremie,
as a bilingual person I would love to see multiple srt subtitles supported, as VLC does.
Thanks!
Hi Pinopinto,
We will be supporting subtitles for both embedded subtitles (mp4 format) as well as .srt files placed in the same folder.
When you mentioned multiple srt subtitles, do you mean for example displaying English and Portugese subtitles simultaneously? This will not be possible with the coming update, but we can consider it for future enhancements, let me know if this was indeed what you meant.
Thanks,
Jeremie
trak.tv support is available on various media player solutions including boxee, roku and appletv with the firecore.com atv flash black.
Of course, I meant “DVB-C and DVB-S shouldn’t be too difficult I would think to support either”
This is great!
I have two questions:
1. In the final version, will there be more compatible dongles?
2. Will be supported on all DiskStation models?
Suggestion: AVerMedia H830 USB DVB-T
Thanks for making this great technologies!
I would like to intercede for the same product.
Hi Pvieto and Yarda,
Yes, our RD team are currently testing more dongles, we will publish the list as soon as tests are completed.
I’ve let RD know about your request for the AVerMedia H830 USB DVB-T.
Thanks for your feedback!
Jeremie
Hi,
Please count me in as well as a request for the H830 DVB-T stick.
Regards,
Jose Luis
I second the recommendation for integration with trakt.tv for watched. Also what source will be used to get details about movies & tv shows? Will it support plugin model to add our own sources for metadata? Any other management features like filename formatting?
Hi Shad,
The databases used for movie metadata retrieval are themoviedb and freebase.
For TV shows, we use thetvdb.com and tvrage.
Plugins mecanisms can be supported for users to get their own metadata, they need to follow specific rules though, which makes it slightly “technical”, but you will be able to. We don’t plan specific management features for the final release, but any suggestions are welcome:
http://www.synology.com/support/inquiry_form.php?lang=enu&type=1
We don’t plan any specific
… given the current success rate (read: failure rate) of matching file names against actual correct titles, I’d be more happy do disable this matching altogether (and use the file name as title) or be able to specify filename formatting templates. For instance, a file called “The Importance Of Being Earnest [Oliver Parker, 2002]” is matched against the movie “Parker” by Taylor Hackford, to be released in 2013. Or worse, the block buster “Witness [Peter Weir, 1985]” is matched against “Weird Woman” by Fritz Leiber Jr in 1944 (huh?). Apparently the importer doesn’t like Director hints.
Anyway, how do I change this matching behavior, disable it or better, define my own import script. Alternatively (approaching it from the other direction) what is the proper form of file name in order to make this work reliably?
Apart from this mishap, I am quite impressed by the functionality of Video Station, inline transcoding and tablet support and would like to install and use it more permanently as video server.
Hi HenkW
For the file naming convention, you can find it here:
http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?uid=64511&f=222&t=59186&start=0
I would recommend reporting these matching errors to our support team for them to check more in detail and our engineers can go more, as for the suggestion to disable the matching, I will forward it to our developers, however, the best would be to nip it in the bud and improve the accuracy itself.
Br,
Jeremie
Jeremie,
I have a similar issue: I am Italian, and I would like to change (or to add) the metadata retrieval site to one able to manage italian titles (imdb.it?). Managing the information manually is taking very long to me.
Is it possible? How?
Regarding the movie player, is there a plan to support .ISO files?
Thank you
Hi Jeremie
I am a new proud user of a DS212j, I had to make some comments about video station
It is not available for android devices, (I have an android Phone and a Galaxy Tab). Will be a application in the future?
I cannot find the application in Apple Store here in Greece although I had read that there is an application.
In all of my connections I use https, so most formats are not playing, the use of vls plugin in firefox and in all broswers is not good choice ( my opinion ).
Some few formats are working but most of them I get error like ( failed to play the video because its format is not supported by your broswer or vlc plugin ).
I don’t know what is the problem, but with those limitations the application is useless.
Of course your efford to improve the packages supported by Diskstaion are excelent, also your support is superb, but is there a way that video station has its own player like it happens is some formats?
Thanks in advance.
Hi,
We will be releasing DS video for iOS devices first (the app is currently under review by the Ap store’s review team, should be available very shorty).
The Android versions will follow with the next DSM upgrade, which should be 4.2.
Also, feel welcome to contact our support team to check the problems you were mentioning concerning formats:
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
Hi Jeremief,
put a bit priority to support android
i belive android phones are spreaded much more then iphone nowdays. you will make alots of us happy. I think support for android is realy important. I am happy owner of synology ( i used before qnap) and it capabilities are amazing. but please
Hi mraky,
First of all, thanks for supporting Synology!
DS video will be coming to Android, don’t worry about that. As it’s always riskier to launch on multiple platforms simultaneously, we prefer to launch one version first, and focus on making it work well, before releasing on the other platform.
Understandable one should focus on 1 item to do best job.
Normally you should think that focus would be done on (after market research), the biggest market.
As Android is 75% of the world market, why focus on a smaller piece of 14.9% (IOS piece of market in Q3 of 2012)?
Hi Lode,
Your point about market size is absolutely valid, however you should put it into perspective: iOS is a very “homogeneous” platform, with only iOS devices (all generations of iPhones, iPads and iPod touch will be 15 to 20 at most).
Android on the other hand is available on more than 1500 devices of different brands (and more if you consider different generations), that makes work much tougher for our developers and QA team, which explains why even with a smaller market share, we prefer to start on iOS before bringing the app to Android.
This doesn’t mean we have a bias against Android, just that it makes more sense in terms of development to start on an “easy platform” and bring in a solid app, then expand to the more “difficult platform”.
Jeremie
I am a happy user of Plex MS on my DS412+ and Plex client on my PC and iPhone.
To be honest, I am concerned that Synology is just starting in video apps and does not have the years of experience of Plex, so I am a bit dubious about what Synology can achieve there… In any case, the proof will be in the pudding.
Could you elaborate a bit more on what, if any, will the Video Station bring me in addition? What are its “own strengths and advantages” that will give me a different value from what I already get with Plex?
Finally, I’d be interested in knowing the proportion of Synology customers that have a model with Intel chip on it (and thus can already run Plex). 5%? 10%? 15%?
Well, whether you will find use for it or not, it has Live TV while Plex hasn’t, so that’s already a plus!
Hi,
IMO, the DTV module is an important feature of Video Station as it allows to both recording and streaming.
To answer your question about the proportion of x86 DiskStations users, I don’t have these figures, but about a third of our models run with thes eintel chips.
Video Station can run on non-x86 models, though as mentioned in the post, DTV streaming isn’t supported on these models.
I would imagine the Intel based synology is primaril used by the SMB market that need the performance, rather than the Plex solution which is primarily aimed at home users. So I would think the overlap of people who use Plex and an Intel based Synology (2 or 4 bay system) is less than 1% of the customer base.
Thus the need for video solution for ALL Diskstation customers. Bravo, Synology. I applaud you heartily for taking this brave step. The media centre market is strewn with poorly designed and overly complex systems. DSM 4.1 and app solutions look like winners already!
This is terrific news. A couple of questions:
1. Does this transcode on the fly, if so, what are minimum DS requirements
2. If transcoding doesn’t happen on the fly, what file formats are supported?
3. For live TV, can an HDHomeRun be connected on the same network or does it have to be plugged directly into DS
4. What ‘clients’ other than mobile will be availabe (is this the main diff with Plex)
5. What do you see as the strengths/weaknesses vs Plex to help users decide?
Thanks again, very exciting stuff.
Hi,
Transcoding:
-it’s done on the fly, and applies to x86 models. For ARM models, the formats supported by the iOS device will be played directly (MP4 – M4V – MOV). Other formats can be played if you install 3rd party player on your device (like Gplayer or AcePlayer for instance).
HD HomeRun: we don’t support this tuner currently, so I can’t comment on it, but as we have had some users contact us about it, we will surely test the DVB-T version, I hope to be able to give you more details on it by then
Clients available + strengths and weaknesses compared with Plex:
-Yes, that’s one main difference with Plex, we are starting on iOS devices first and will follow soon with Android/Windows Phone. We don’t provide other clients in the meantime.
-Currently, the DTV module is the main difference. Also, while we hope Plex can provide an ARM-based package shortly, in the meantime Video Station is available on these platforms so all users can get access to a video center package.
As mentioned above, currently Plex offers a solution for Android users, as DS video will first start on iOS before being brought to the Android platform in the future.
I’m still confused… your heading is “so what’s new”, but you just describe the problem in that paragraph, i.e. no Plex-like Video Station capability available on ARM models. Are you stating in DSM 4.1, we’ll get the Video Station capabilities you describe for ARM models, with the exception that the ARM models won’t do transcoding?
Hi Zazz, sorry for my late reply,
You’re correct, ARM-models previously didn’t have any “Media center” available, Video Station brings that option. Due to CPU performance limitations, we can’t support Transcoding on them, so this means you can play (in terms of formats):
-iOS supported formats: MP4 – M4V – MOV (with necessary codecs: h264…)
-mainstream formats by installing a 3rd party player on your device (AcePlayer or GPlayer). The formats in question will be posted online very soon, here are some popular ones you will be able to play: MKV, AVI, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4…
This applies to ARM-base models, for x86, as you mentioned, transcoding/remuxing will handle the none iOS supported formats.
Jeremie
So basicly nothing changes, x86 already had plex, and ARM
still can’t transcode. The only change is a somewhat better UI.
Why not a “lazy” transcode option for ARM:
1) Make a “watch folder” where the originals are.
2) When CPU is low, transcode movies and place in “transcoded folder”
This way, us poor people can watch/browse our movies in our prefered format (h264/mp4/aac/720p for me).
@martijn,
Again, sorry for late reply.
I’d disagree as previously ARM models had no Video Package whatsoever. Also, with the final release, the popular mkv format will be read on more ARM models (not all) if their CPU performances meet a certain level.
The option you are mentioning resembles the current process on DS photo+ where you enable “conversion” through the Media Indexing service, that would allow more formats to be read even on ARM models. Well noted and I’ll forward this to our RD team.
Thanks for your feedback,
Jeremie
Or a remux only option for ARM to begin with?
Since i already have my movies and TV folder organized. Will i have to move them, or can i choose the folder i have my movies and tv located?
Same for the new music program.
Hi,
Sure, that’s possible from the Settings page > Video folder > edit > select the new folder. Then choose Re-index.
For Audio Station however, this should be done from the DSM Control panel > Media Indexing service.
Tv support is great but in the us the tvb tuners will not work as all us cable encrypt all of their channels and u need a tv tuner with cable card support. Verizon. Att. Comcast all encrypt their channels. I would suggest adding support for a silicondust hd homerun prime. It is a Network ethernet tv that has cable card support and can legally watch the encrypted channels. Also the hd homerun has 3 tv tuners so you can record multiple shows at the same time or record and watch live tv at the same time.
http://www.silicondust.com/products/hdhomerun/prime/
Hi IceTeaman, sorry for getting back late to you,
Yes, as we currently support DVB-T, we would need to support ATSC and DVB-C standards before HD homerun could be used with the Recorded TV module for US users. But we’ll definitely consider this for future enhancements of the package.
Good thing to know for all US and Canadian customer… Do you think it will be “available” in a futur version of DSM, or only of the Video Station package ?
Hi Jeremie
This is Vincent Ho from Hong Kong. Are the video station support DVB-T/H format?
If I record the tv program, which format for store the file(H,264, Mpeg1, mov..etc)?
Can I buy the TV module in Hong Kong?
Best Regards
Vincent Ho
Hi Vincent,
For now (as well as for the final version), we will only support the DVB-T standard.
Regarding programs, they will be recorded in Mpeg-2.
You mentioned you are in HK: I think the standard is like in China and it should be DTMB, so I’m afraid the DTV module won’t be available in HK. You may want to check locally if this correct.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Digital_broadcast_standards.svg
Dear Jeremie,
Hong kong was DTMB standard.
Will your video station support above standard later?
Mpeg2 size was very large, will save any format later, such as rmvb, h.264 mp4…….etc.
Thanks!
Vincent Ho
Hi Vincent,
Sure, we plan to support it, but this we be on a later version, not with the DSM 4.1 release.
I will let our developers know your suggestion about format of recordings of the TV recorder module.
This is an extraordinary move on Synology’s part. I have been waiting to see how video will be treated by Synology and I am pleasantly surprised here. Great move guys and gals!
I have been using a DS111 since last November and have been using it in tandem with an AppleTV v2 with Firecore’s media player. trak.tv was recently introduced as an add on. Together with the Synology DS and DSM4.1 this combination will be an extraordinary solution. I also have an OTA antenna so the recording capability will be even better! Looking forward to the beta testing of 4.1.
Here are some articles folks may want to read about my experience:

Hey Jeremie,
Did you read my previous post about US cable channels, and the silicondust?
Hi,
I just have on question : like ds music, can I download some movies from my NAS with ds video for watching them offline ?
Hi Eltius,
Offline playing is currently not supported on DS video, but we will definitely consider it.
Thanks!
Thanks for your answer !
Just want to add that offline support would be the absolute killer feature for DS Video. I know you can do it somewhat in DS File, but DS Video is really where it should be. I’d love to be able to fire up DS Video, select a couple videos for offline viewing, and then head to the airport knowing that I have some current videos to watch on the plane.
Keep up the great work!
Hi can’t wait for this update to come out. you make a great product. I was just wonder are you going to support the dvb-t2 standard? Can’t wait for this new update to come out.
Hi,
We will definitely be considering adding more standards, however as mentioned above, this will be in a future version. But I’ll definitely let our engineers know about your suggestion for dvb-t2.
Jeremie
Thank’s for replying and I can’t wait for the update, Keep up the good work!!
Hey Jeremie did you have a response to my concern about the US not being able to use the tv tuners due to cable companies encrypting the channels?
Hi,
As we are starting with support of DVB-T, we have not yet gone into details concerning the encryption with DVB-C in the US, however, it would seem that we will need to incorporate a dvb-c smart card for this.
As mentioned, support of DVB-C would be in a future version, however, we will definitely look into the HD homerun as you mentioned its interesting ability to support multiple tuners.
Thanks for the reply and i really just wanted to make u all aware of the cable card issue. The silicondust tuner is ip based and Can be used with myth tv and windows media center, vlc. as a fellow programmer integrating this should be easy as the video stream is ip mpeg output and is not based any particular cable standard between synology and the tuner. Commands can also be send over ip, they even have an api / c code library on their site which can help with.commands
Hi Jeremie,
This sound exciting. I was just thinking it would be nice if we could use DVB-Ts in the USB port. Unfortunately none of the ones I have work with the beta – I hope you will add more.
As for streaming on arm devices, are they fast enough just to pass the data on? To say a Boxee Box? It can play a huge amount of things and doesn’t really need any transcoding.
Hello Synvia,
I’m sorry to hear you have not been able to use these dongles: as we will be continuing the test more tuner models, feel welcome to let us know your suggestions (here or at following feature request form):
http://www.synology.com/support/inquiry_form.php?lang=enu&type=1
You mentioned streaming from a Boxee Box: currently this will not be possible as Video Station has not yet been integrated to the DLNA media server.
Jeremie
Well two of the sticks are RTL2838 DVB-T Realtek Semiconductor Corp and RTL2832U DVB-T Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
The third one from Pinnacle seems to have gone missing for the moment.
Hi Synvia,
Thanks for getting back to me on this, the 2 ones from Realtek have already been recommended so are on our To-Test list.
Let me know if you find the 3rd one and it’s detailed model name.
Jeremie
But apparently you couldn’t be bothered to actuall add them to the final release.
Hi Synvia,
The dongle list has not grown as much as expected with the final release of DSM as it’s being trickier than initially planned to support on all DiskStation platforms, as well as getting the tuner themselves (some tuners are specific to certain markets).
While I can’t give you a specific timeline, we’re working on this and will be adding more as soon as we can guarantee the tuners are compatible.
Hi Jeremie,
I think you’ve won the jackpot here!!! Kudos to you
One question I have.
Since I have my DS-411+II at home, I’ve always wanted to use it as a TV server.
I use MediaPortal in my HTPC at home (I have 2 of those), which all connect to my main computer that runs the MediaPortal TV server.
It would be great if the TV server could run on the NAS itself, streaming media to the clients as requested (rtsp protocol)
I’m sure XBMC users will appreciate this too.
By the way, will the NAS be able to support several streams simultaneously? i.e. streaming one stream and recording another?
Hi,
Thanks for the feedback and suggestions.
Regarding using the NAS as a proper TV server, that would definitely be on a later version, but it’s well noted!
As for your second question, the final version will introduce simultaneous streaming and recording, on the same channel.
We should be able to allow streaming a different channel than recorded as soon as we support multiple dongles, or the network tuners such as the HDHomeRun mentioned above. Again, this in in our plans, but will not be available in the final release of DSM 4.1.
Jeremie
What do i have to do to make this available via the iOS app? which ports do i need to forward? quickconnect doesn’t seem to enable it.
Hi,
for any issues, feel welcome to contact our support team:
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
You’re also welcome to let me know if you need any specific help on this issue.
Best regards,
Jeremie
Jeremie,
I wrote a quick blurb on your announcement at totalhtpc.com, i’d like to do a full review of the the beta, but nothing plays for me. If I could ask for help, i’d appreciate it, rather than just writing that i couldn’t get it to work
Hi,
It will be very much appreciated if you could also support DVB-H.
Are you planning to support the Sony PlayTV?
).
This is a very economically priced twin-DVB-tuner USB device with full driver support in current linux kernels.
I recently went through an exercise of getting MythTV 0.25 backend running on my DS1511+ (a “proper” TV server to quote your words above). My original plan was to use PlayTVs, but I was stymied by the lack of driver support in the Synology kernel. Instead, I had to fork out extra cash for a couple of Kaiser Baas network tv tuners (new name for the HD HomeRuns).
Assuming the kernel for DSM 4.1 will contain the supported tuner drivers, and that the device file layout was fairly standard, this would theoretically allow me to add my now redundant PlayTV tuner back in to my MythTV setup on the DS1511 (more tuners would be nice
Hello Sethvir,
Have forwarded this request (Sony PlayTV) to the RD team in charge of tuner support, they will be testing it shortly. The list of all supported dongles will be available for the final release of DSM 4.1.
Jeremie
Hi Jeremie,
I have did some test on 4.1beta, but i was to unstable for me, so bad that i was force to downgrade.
do you know when next update of the beta will come out? after the first beta release of 4.1 there have been very quiet from synology how the beta testing is going(good and bad).
But DSvideo was very heavy on cpu use then i test it, and the resolution very low. compare to the plex that have 50% load with 720p streaming.
Hello Eideen,
Their shouldn’t be a second Beta, but the final DSM 4.1, I can’t give you an exact date as this really depends on user feedback (objective is to fix all bugs to make it stable, so we will delay if necessary).
You can check here the length of the previous Beta programs, fyr:
http://www.synology.com/support/beta_program.php?lang=enu
For the CPU load, which model are you using? Feel welcome to contact our support team for them to help you check any performance issues:
http://www.synology.com/support/beta_form_4.1.php?lang=us
or
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
Jeremie
hi Jeremie
How can you be sure to get all bugs with only 1 beta release?
can’t you make a blog on how synology conducte beta testing? That way all of us that are used to having many beta release before a final version feels reassured.
Eideen.
Hi Eideen,
To answer your question, we generally proceed with only one Beta as the number of Beta users is fairly important so get lots of feedback. Bugs which show up after Beta are generally isolated or due to specific causes, not mainstream.
Also as mentioned, our Beta period isn’t fixed as we rather delay than push through a buggy version.
In the case of DS video, many users bugs were in fact due to formats not being played natively (need 3rd party player).
However for cases like yours with an abnormal CPU load, we have checked on a case to case basis (I’m not sure if you contacted our support team since you chose to downgrade?). I know a bad experience (need to downgrade to DSM4.0) may leave you with a bad impression, however there are very few of these cases with regards of the total number of participants in the Beta program.
Finally, regarding the Beta testing progress, Synology don’t have an official “feedback” on the website for example (this wasn’t the case on previous Beta programs either). Compared with previous Betas, this testing has been going at a standard rate not slower than previous Betas.
I hope this helps, and we would like to thank all the Beta testers for their time and involvement to help us bring in DSM 4.1.
Jeremie
I am know u all are trying very hard to bring video station and tv to the dsm in a timely fashion and release dsm 4.1 to the masses. It is a very useful and much value added feature for the nas and complete content storage and access solution. But really adding all of these pre school usb tv tuners misses the mark. I really think you guys should try to bring hd homerun to 4.1 as most use cases for a tv tuner solution = watch one show and record another. Or record 2 at the same time. Or have more than one person utilizing the tuner watching 2 different shows at the same time.
I would like to point out that integrating hd homerun into your system is not a complex task as they have a linux version if their api. It is a binary and they provide all of the source files for easy compile, integration, extension, or as is binary.
http://www.silicondust.com/support/hdhomerun/downloads/
in addition they also have a useful programming and integration guide here.
http://www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun/hdhomerun_development.pdf
Outside of windows media center, myth tv, and their own quick tv program, I have personally been able to view the stream using vlc and control the device using their api for the windows.exe from the command line. see these steps
http://www.silicondust.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1924&sid=750749cdeea7313bb96464b5da205400
also they have both 3 and 6 tuner models for people who are true tv ppl.
In my opinion ppl who will take advantage of the tv stuff will be tecky hipster more advanced synology users and we dont have time for simple dongle tuners… But hdhomerun is also simple enough for the average elementary synology user to use. and lets face it people by synology because its the best nas solution, great support, ease of use and great ui, lots of rich features, scalability from home to vmware power orporate users, upgrades, competitive pricing and GREAT support for 3rd party hardware.
If the same users were to buy a tv tuner, we would look to buy the best, something similar to synology, feature rich, cost effective, and smokes the competition…. that my friends is hd homerun. Some of the other ppl on this forum know what i am saying And the others who are playing around with the pre school usb tuners probably didnt know about hd homerun…. or did not make the best investment for their $$$$.
my 2 cents….

Hi Jeremie
I have also a suggestion.
In Switzerland most of the TV-Channels are with DVB-C so it would be great if you can add DVB-C as soon as possible.
I am searching a long time for such a solution!
Below some TV-Sticks with DVB-C to support (test):
- Hauppage WinTV-HVR-930C-HD
- Elgato TV-Stick EyeTV hybrid, DVB-T/DVB-C
- Sundtek MediaTV Digital Home (DVB-CT)
Thanks a lot
Hi Boemi,
We will definitely consider adding DVB-C, however this will not be available in DSM4.1, but, as mentioned previously, with a later version.
Thanks for the tuner suggestions we’ll definitely test these dongles when we work on DVB-C.
Jeremie
This is exactly what I have been waiting for. I want to be able to stream movies to my ipad and later apple tv.
Very keen to be part of beta release
Hi Jeremie,
I understand that the first clients to be developped are going to be for the iOS devices. Is there any front end planned for PC or Mac users? I mean it’s great to watch movies on a mobile device but while I’m at home, I’d rather watch them on my big screen tv…
Thanks
Hi,
Regarding clients for Video Station, you can currently play from the Video Station itself and it will open in the web browser, no specific clients are planned for PC/Mac.
While this feature won’t be available in DSM 4.1, on the long term we hope to have Video Station supported on the Media Server package so users can stream from a DLNA certified device.
Jeremie
Hi Jeremie,
I’m beginning to organize my video collection on DS212+. In order to take advantage of Video Station should I put my videos on the “Photo” folder or the “Video” folder? Which one is best / easiest for the future development of Video Station? (I’m assuming there’s no point in using SA Photo Uploader as Video Station will be released pretty soon).
Hi Maria,
Video Station will be slightly different in terms of folder indexing as you will be able to choose the exact folder you want to index. So you will not be limited to the “video” shared folder.
Also, as you may know, Video Station sorts your video files as “Movies”, “TV shows”, “Home videos” or Recorded TV files”: you actually select the folder you wish for to index for each of these categories.
For instance: the movie index folder can be the “photo” folder. The TV show indexed folder can be the “video\TV show” subfolder… it’s very flexible.
I’d say it doesn’t matter if your videos are in “photo”, but it’s possible to do that. What’s important is to sort each type in 4 different sub folder: “Movies”, “TV shows”, “Home videos” or Recorded TV files”, that’ll save you time reorganizing later.
If you do this, then you can use SA uploader (this uses the PC CPU and not the DS cpu, which will speed up the process).
I hope this helps,
Jeremie
Hi Jeremie,
Do you have any plans to enable video station playback on the Apple TV3 (e.g. via an airplay interface)?
Hi Nik,
Airplay should be supported on DS video with the next release (not on current Beta), but not Video Station. So you will need to do this from an iPad/iPhone.
Jeremie
Thanks for the reply!
So there is no support for a direct stream from the DS to the atv?
Nik
HI Nik,
That’s correct, currently Audio Station is the only “Web app” which supports this.
For the others, you will need to go through the mobile app on an iDevice:
-DS video
-DS photo+
-DS file
-Plex (3rd party)
Jeremie
Hi Jeremie,
I have a AverMedia A852 DVB-TH for Hong Kong Standard which i would wish Synology can support in the new release. I’ ve been searching for AverMedia 850 and as refer to Avermedia, the model has been EOL.
My Spec.
DS1511+
3GB RAM
Hi,
Correct me if I’m mistaken, but the tuner you are refering to is AverMedia A852 DMB-TH (not DVB-T/H)??
As HK is a not using the DVB-T standard but DTMB, I believe we will not be supporting it in the coming release, though when we start adding standards, I’ll forward this model to our RD team for testing.
We will be posting the list of all new compatible dongles on our website soon.
As for the Video Station movie info, I’ve forwarded to our RD team your suggestion to upload pictures from the PC.
Thanks for your feedback,
Best regards,
Jeremie
One more suggestion on the Video Station’s Edit Video info. i think is better to have one more choise of editing the poster by browsing the local content instead of adding URLs.
Hi Jeremie!
I was very happy to find this new functionality in DSM 4.1 beta. It was like a dream come true. Indexing my video-library is now done and I can play some of the movies using DS Video on my iPad and iPhone. I have, however, not been able to play a single movie from the Video Station interface. I have vlc installed and I’ve tried both IE, Firefox and Chrome on the Win7 PC, and Safari and Chrome on the Mac. Nothing works (I get an error message saying that I need to install VLC – which is already there!). Regarding the fact that not all files play on DS Video (while they play fine when using DS File) is even more strange. I have filed bug-reports for all of this, but still after several days, there is no reply from support.
Although I would expect instability from a beta-release, Video-station feels more like an alpha-release currently. I sure hope that you can fix these problems soon, because it solves a long-standing problem for me (not having to have the Mac turned on all the time).
Thanks!
Hi,
I believe you’ve already contacted me through the Synology forum about this issue, will ask our support team to check why you are experiencing these problems.
I’d like to encourage any other users who need assistance to contact our technical support team:

Hi,
I’ve just updated to 4.1. I would be interested in the TV features, but aren’t sure exaclty what i need.
Am i right in thinking i need an x86 processor for live recording? Does that mean i can still plug a dongle in and record for later viewing?
How do i find out what processor my DS212+?
Hi Ruserc,
if you use a non-x86 model, then you will need to install a 3rd party player (AcePlayer/GPlayer) on your iPad or iPhone to get live streaming and simultaneously record the problem (must be the same channel).
Your DS212+ isn’t an Intel CPU. We don’t publish the CPU platforms (to keep things simple and readable), but you can refer to the specs for DS video below (click at the bottom, they are hidden by default):
http://www.synology.com/dsm/home_mobile_support_ds_video.php?lang=enu
DS212+ is in group2, so you will need the 3rd party player.
Jeremie
One thing that’s incorrect in the post above, if you can’t install VLC you can’t play video. My PC at work is locked down and I can’t upgrade anything and the videos fail to play. There’s also issues if you use SSL that make video a real issue.
Any ETA on giving us an actual fix for video? 4.1 makes video pretty but it’s not anymore playable, it still doesn’t stream in IE, the whole thing has to download. What we need is a way to stream video reliably on ANY PC or mobile device. Synology’s software is generally great, but video off the LAN is still problematic.
Hi Bladehawk,
Most of the issues reported to us during Beta have been solved, if you are still have problems with Video Station/DS video, you can contact our support team (link below), or let me know if you already have so we can follow-up on your ticket:

The dtv dongle support page (http://www.synology.com/support/faq_show.php?q_id=532) says that MSI digivox mini II v.3.0 has been tested as compatible. I bought one of these, works fine on PC so no hardware probs, but my DS212+ w/ latest 4.1 DSM keeps saying “Plug in a DTV dongle first…” whenever i try to scan channels on Video Station. It doesn’t seem to recognise its plugged in. As there’s no instructions or discussions on video station community forum, i don’t know if i’m just not doing something or this dongle just doesn’t work with the NAS.
any ideas?
Hi,
You shouldn’t be experiencing this problem as the dongles are tested on all platforms, here is the support form to report and get help on this issue:

Jeremie
Any idea when is the Video station going to be available on the Android devices ?
thanks in advance
Hi,
Yes, we are planning DS video on Android phones and tabs. Hopefully with the next DSM release,
Jeremie
It is very tiresome for those of us with Android devices to wait for another version of DSM to gain parity with IOS devices. What is the date of this? How long must I unhappily wait for Android support?
Hi,
We generally develop on iOS first as there is less complexity, especially for a new app: it runs on just a few different models. In comparison, there are over 1000Android devices on the market, so it requires more effort to develop and stabilize. As mentioned, we prefer to do one version after the other rather than release two “buggy” apps.
We generally have 2 DSM release each year.
PS: I’m also impatient as I use an Android too;)
Is there support to log in to DS Video from outside LAN? Will there be one?
I travel a lot and have good internet connection at home so streaming to the internet would be great!
Hi,
Yes, you can log into to DS video using the external IP or the domain name of your DiskStation.
Jeremie
I’ve just upgraded to DSM4.1 and start using the Video app…
Well i must say great idea and app.
And of course it’s one of the first releases it’s already great.
But I see some improvements;
When playing a DVD with a menu you’re stuck. It stays in the menu for ever..Or is there a way to “click” on play…
Hi,
I’m not sure at which stage you are getting the freeze, would you like to have our support team check this:
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
Thanks.
Hi:
I think the work you are doing to be close to the concerns of users is excellent. Congratulations on it.
I have to say I really liked the new application of Video Station. The problem I have found in the language. I am Spanish, and thus the automatic search of the titles is wrong too often.
Could add in a future version the possibility that the user choose the Video Station site where the data should take? Use a local application that allows me to choose between or FilmAffinity IMDB, and I find it very easy to correct this problem.
I think being able to choose the source of the information would solve this problem for users of any language.
Thanks!
HI,
Thanks for the suggestion,we will definitely try to implement it. I don’t know if it will possible to allow any source, but giving users a selection for at least the main languages is definitely an objective.
It is certainly great news. I will be attentive to developments.
Thanks!.
Hi,
great source for czech and slovak language is csfd.cz
Good morning (in Spain), I´m very glad with new 4.1 DSM applications, especially with VideoStation. I´m own two iPads and an iPhone; the DS apps for this devices are excellents. The DS video app for iOS works fine, my mkv´s works flawlessly but the audio is bad, seems a radio sound… ¿whats´s the matter?, I hope that this was resolved in future actualizations of this software…
Good work!
Synology DS212+ and DS111 like backup machine
Feel welcome to have our support team look into your audio issue so we can either help you solve it or provide a fix in a future update.
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
hi…i have to start saying Video Station is a huge addition to DSM…thank you for that.
I’m having problems, thou, with the series i have. Sometimes they gather information from internet in German or Polish, depending on the first result that the search shows and there is no visible way to change that, even by hand.
The only way i’ve found is by editing each episode but that is a lot of work if you have a 7 year-long series, like Star trek for example…is there a way to change the Series description without doing this? And, it would be a of great help if you could select multiple episodes to change their description, for example “Fox’s Touch” leads me to a Japanese Show or Doctor Who (the new series) fills with the information of the Classic series…
Hi,
You can select multiple episodes within a season (with SHIFT or CTRL and selecting), then when editing the info, if you have selected “Multiple entries”, the change will apply to these episodes. In this mode, you can change either the season, name of the TV show…
However, if the info isn’t in the database itself, then editing manually will be necessary. Regarding the languages hopefully we can provide an option to select it, but it’s not available yet and will depend on the database we use.
Jeremie
Hi,
Did you plan make ‘Video Station’ plugin for Dune HDI?
brg,
Serhiy.
Hi,
We don’t plan such a plugin for these type of players, but will ask our engineering team to look into this, thanks for the suggestion.
I have a Sony Bravida KDL 2011 (KDL-46EX724) and now a DS213+ with the latest DSM. If I get a DVB-T dongle will my NAS (DS213+) be able to transcode all (or most) of my movies stored on my NAS? Even those .avi files which I now have to transcode via my PC? My TV can play some avi movies but not all, it also plays some other formats but not enough.
And if the NAS with a DVB-T dongel can transcode on the fly which dongle would you recommend me to get? Might be differences between different TV brands, Sony, Samsung etc? And I live in Sweden btw…
So which should I get, I´d rather get a cheaper one but I still want a good one, I´m only going to use it for the transcoding from NAS -> TV
Hi,
Transcoding depends on the CPU of the Synolgy itself, the dongle is only for recordingt/sreaming dTV. T
he DS213+ can’t support transcoding. You can get the models which do at the bottom of this page (in the specs, it’s the group1)
http://webtest.synology.com/dsm/home_mobile_support_ds_video.php?lang=enu
For the DVB-T dongle, as long as you get a one which is on this list, you shouldn’t have problems as they have been officially tested:
http://webtest.synology.com/support/faq_show.php?lang=enu&q_id=532
If ever you were interested in the DIGIVOX mini II V3.0, double check the product reference as 2 different chipsets exist for this model (we don’t support the older chipset).
But the dongle itself won’t help for transcoding.
I just bought a ds212j and upgraded it from 4.0 to 4.1.
Im just looking in to it now but wonder if I can set it up so the movies will appear on mye apple tv without turning on a mac or airplay via an ios device?
At present this isn’t possible, you will need to go through an iOS device to use Airplay devices, but we will be working on making it available from Video Station in the future.
Hi Jeremief,
Will there be future support for the “elgato eye tv one”?
This dvb-t tuner stick is also capable of receiving non free to air channels in the Netherlands.
A smartcard must be inserted to receive the non free to air channels.
Best Regards Ray
Hi Ray,
Thanks for the feedback about the Elgato eye TV one, will ask our RD team to purchase it and test it.
Jeremie
Hy all,
is it possible to add a link to directly download the movie please.
Bst Rgds
Hi Jcazanoni,
We’ll definitely consider any request which improves usability.
May I just confirm your suggestion: paste a link directly from the Video Station interface to download directly to the folder indexed for movies (or TV shows)?
This can be done from the Download Station interface (you can select the folder for downloads to be video/movies for example). So you would like to have some sort of integration between the two packages?
Let me know if I have misunderstood your idea.
Jeremie
I’ve upgraded to 4.1 and like the look of this. Would like to add my voice to the call for HDHomerun (DVB-T) support, hope to see it sometime in the future…
I have a few suggestions for for future Video DS:
1. make it render video over DLNA to the appropriate players within the network (similar to Audio Station
2. merge it with Audio Station (and even with Photo Station) and make it Multimedia Station
3. integrate a search&save subtitle feature, based on preferred language (auto search as well)
I couldn’t agree more with point 1. Not supporting DLNA is a major short coming at the moment and would love to see it in a future release.
Hi Beckos and Loubser,
Thanks for the feedback, I’ll pass these suggestions to the Product Development team. More specifically about DLNA support hasn’t be supported up till now but our team is working on this.
Jeremie
Allowing you to choose the player on the network similar to Audio Station is huge. I want a single way for accessing my media regardless of the player and most times that player is a TV – not an iPhone or iPad. Using DS Video on the iPhone or iPad to browse my inventory and select the video is great. Please let me take advantage of it while watching videos on the device I use most – my TV.
Please add support for the EyeTV Hybrid tuner
Hi,
Hopefully support this Elgato model won’t be a problem as another from the same manufacturer is alreday, however we can guarantee this until we have purchased it and tested it on each platform.
Jeremie
Hi,
I have a ds212j
I’ve looked on the list of supported tv dongles at
http://www.synology.com/support/faq_show.php?lang=enu&q_id=532
and can’t find any of them for sale on amazon or anywhere else.
Can you please recommend one and somewhere to buy it from in the UK.
Hi,
If amazon.co.uk is out of stock, you can also try the german website (amazon.de) as most of the sticks we purchased were through our German branch.
You may also be interested in contacting the manufacturer directly/checking their website which often lists their partners:

I hope this helps,
Jeremie
4. add multiple view options – there are too little titles per page. for extensive collections, is boring to navigate through pages. maybe a view with poster+titles only is better.
Hi,
please, add support x 10 bit video ( Hi10P profile ) !!!
Thanks
eMa
Hi eMa,
I’ve checked with our engineers, I’m afraid in the short term this will be difficult to implement due to the library we use. But if it becomes possible we will do our best to implement it.
Hi,
This is a real interesting thread.
My wish is to have an Android TVbox like this http://www.geniatech.com/pa/atv1200.asp
and run the 3 main applications a mediaplayer should have : DS Photo, DS audio and DS video
I currently run Mediaportal (which is a good and free mediacenter) on a miniPC using shares on my Syno and would like to simplify my setup.
I have tested DS video on my iphone :
- Some codecs are missing, some files couldn’t play (is there a way to add codec packs ?)
- can I use an external player within ds video that could handle more codecs
- travelling in the video hangs
- Will there be more codecs/features ont the Android app ?
Improvments I wish to see in the future :
- remember where I stopped playing
- remember if movie was fully watched
- mark movie quality (eg. 1 to 5 stars)
On the syno side,
I have an Avermedia averTv volar HD A835 usb dongle, but I only receive 7 out of the 30 or so channels.
TF1, NRJ12, Eurosport, Arte, TF6, TMC, LCI
I don’t receive HD channels (even if my tuner support HD)
Country is France then region has a single choice : All
Here are the channel details in my area Bordeaux, Gironde, France
Mutiplexers are :
R1 490166 /8
R2 546166 /8
R3 602166 /8
R4 618166 /8
R5 762166 /8
R6 786166 /8
Would it be possible to add channels manually ?
Thanks
Diskstation 212+
DSM 4.1-2636
Hi,
Thanks for your feedback. here are some answers below:
-Android TV:
=>this is a “big project”, we’re aware this is an important feature, but haven’t got a timeline for supporting it
-Some codecs are missing, some files couldn’t play (is there a way to add codec packs ?)
=>Currently this isn’t possible. If your DS can transcode, most codecs are handled. If it doesn’t transcode, this depends on the 3rd party player you are using.
- can I use an external player within ds video that could handle more codecs
=>currently AcePlayer and GPlayer can be used, we are surveying some other ones to see if we can add them soon. Let me know those which you recommend so we can check them.
-travelling in the video hangs
=> You have a DS212+, MP4/M4V/MOV shouldn’t have this problem, is it happening on mkv file? (mkv is remuxed). Let me knwo if this is the case.
=>Another reason can be a weak network, you can consider changing the quality setting.
- Will there be more codecs/features ont the Android app ?
=>Our objective is to give the same user experience on both platforms (and improve on the iOS one). For the codecs, it will depend on the player of the device (different Android phone/tab manufacturers will embed different ones).
Improvements (-remember where I stopped playing, -remember if movie was fully watched, -mark movie quality (eg. 1 to 5 stars)
=>these are really interesting feature, we’ll try to have these implemented soon
Finally, concerning your dvb-t stick, it isn’t officially supported (some problems have been noticed when we tested it on certain models).
However, if it is working on your DS212+, try updating with the hotfix last week (4.1-2367). The frequencies for some countries including France have been reviewed, it should have been improved, let us know if it’s not the case.
-if you have any findings, you can share your experience with other users on our wiki for non-officially supported DVB-T sticks:
http://forum.synology.com/wiki/index.php/User_Reported_Compatible_DVB-T_Sticks
Thanks.
I am using Video station with current software version and it’s a real pain.
Indexing takes forever and you have no way of making clean fresh start.
Ugly directories appear everywhere in my media folders.
No means to debug and understand whats happening inside, why DVB-T recording fails with simple “Error” result.
Problems posted on the Video Station forum never gets answered.
This is almost useless.
I would appreciate any recommendation on a real media solution.
Hi,
The forum is a user forum, you can contact our team for help on the problems you are experiencing:

HI!
I have a DS110j NAS server with the DSM 4.1-2647 installed.
I have downloaded the new DS Video on my iPad, but I can´t make any connection to my Nas-server. When I try to login it says that “Video Station is not installed or activated on my diskstation”!
How do I install or activate this feature in the DSM software?
Best regards
Dennis P
Hi Dennis,
Once you have logged into DSM (as admin), go to the package center. As you hven’t installed Video Station yet, it will be in the tab: “available”.
Once you have installed it, you’ll just need to create the indexed folders (one for each type: Movies, TV shows, Home Videos and Recorded TV programs), and place your video files in them.
Then you can use DS video by connecting to your Nas,
Jeremie
Hi,
first of all, kudos, to a great product.
Question: Is it possible to login/access, over the web using a browser, directly to the video station interface without first logging into the DSM?
It would be a great and effective way to share e.g. home videos with friends and family, while keeping them private (i.e. not publishing on facebook, youtube etc.
Cheers,
-M
Hi,
This isn’t possible currently through a web browser, only from an iOS device.
I’ll forward this suggestion to our Product development team though.
What you are looking for is however possible with Photo Station, as you can create specific Photo Station users, and can log in from the browser (without being logged into DSM). Photo Station also allows you to upload videos.
Hope this helps,
Jeremie
Hi Jeremief,
I think a very good feature to all this apps-like should be the ability to configure the Play Button action.
Actually it launch the media on the hardware (iphone, ipad,…) directly, but the best should be to launch the media to another one.
In my case i have a media player(Dune) et my Synology(all videos) and I can control my Dune with http url request
If we can configure the Play button action i will be able to launch my Videos hosted by my Synology, launched by my iPad et viewed on my TV.
If you can do this, you’ll be the winner of the year !
Marc
Hi,
Thanks for your feedback. Streaming to Media players is indeed something we will be working on. Currently it is limited to Airplay via an iOS device, but we hope to generalise it and make it available from Video Station directly soon.
any plan to support Hong Kong region Digital TV standard, DMB-T/H?
Hi,
While we hope to support this in the future, I’m afraid we currently don’t have a set timeline to implement new standards.
I use ivi to convert my video on the Mac. So all of my video has embedded meta data in the mp4 video, Move art, Actors, Movie synopsis, etc. All embedded in the file itself. Will Video Station recognize this information or will it overwrite this information or does it just includes it’s own information for the server without touching the actual file.
Hi,
To answer your question, the embedded metadata (or any which you have modified yourself) won’t be overwritten by Video Station.
Video Station basically uses the file’s title to carry out the search from the online DB we use. If metadata retrieved for the title in question is then updated in the Video Station Database fields.
However, if you copy the file on your computer and view it with a different piece of software, you won’t view this metadata as it’s linked to Video Station, only the embedded. one
Jeremie
Great work Synology for such a wonderful product. I have a question about the Video Station in DSM4.1 build 2647. I have setup the Video Station along with port forwarding of 9006 on my router (Airport Extreme 2011 model) in order to access it on the road over https on my iPhone5. I can access the disk station fine over internet (3G or LTE). My video library shows up fine on my iPhone. However, when I tried to play any movie, I got the error message as follows: “The certificate for this server is invalid. You might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be “xxx” which could put your confidential information at risk.”
I can play movie over VPN and connected to local IP of the Synology disk station. But cannot do so over DDNS without VPN. Any suggestions how I can fix the problem?
Thanks
Steve
Hi Steve,
The problem may come from using port 9006 as it is for DTV Live streaming, #5001 is the one used for HTTPS connections, and #5000 for HTTP.
If you’re still having this problem after opening these 2 ports, I’d recommend getting in touch with our support team for them to help:

Can make the DS Video App have a function that list by folder, due to my NAS have many video grouped by folder and it’s sub-folder. Now the DS Video list all the video in single page, it hard to locate my video.
Hi Besamsam,
Sure, we’ve had quite a few requests for this “by folder feature”, our engineers are working on it. Should be available soon.
Jeremie
Hi again,
We’re developing the “by folder” option, however we’d like to get some feedback from users.
Notably for “movies”, if in a same folder you have three different files of a same movie (let’s say, in 3 different formats or resolutions):
-are you looking to have the 3 files listed separately, only the file name changing?
-or are you looking to have one thumbnail like in the current design?
Looking forward to your feedback. (If any other readers have preferences/suggestions about this feature, feel welcome to post it)
Jeremie
Hi. I have issues when using the NAS with my mac. When I tried to stream movie files (.mkv) from my DS212, I got the error message of “Failed to play the video because its format is not supported by your browser or vlc plugin”, even though I have installed VLC and VLC browser plugin.
Is this a limitation of Synology NAS on mac??
Also, when I stream .avi files, I can not move forward or backward. I can only watch from the beginning, while windows user has no problem on this.
Hi,
You’re correct, playing with VLC on MAC is problematic, while Windows machines won’t have these issues.
Jeremie
He,
Sorry for my english but I am french.
I’m writing a pluggin to searche information on french site of film. I have do every thinks for films but i have no information of imdb id. I would like to add link to the site but I don’t know how to write information in the json result.

Hello Geunneguez,

Merci
Thomas
Hello,
It would be nice to differentiate the series of films.
In general, is it possible to add information in the interface? Type link …
thank you
Thomas
Hi Jeremie,
I just tried the new DS video 1.2 on my iPhone. It looks quite nice and I was able to stream movies over the Internet from my DS1512+ at home to my iPhone in my remote office. However, it doesn’t look like that the movies were being streamed at their full framerate (looked a little choppy).
I have a 20Mbps download/2Mbps upload Internet connection at home and my remote office has 10Mbps download/10Mbps upload connection. Is this caused by my 2Mbps upload bandwidth at home?
I was able to stream the same movies with Plex from my DS1512+ and the playback on my iPhone was smooth. And when I went home, the same movies were able to be streamed at their full framerate with DS Video.
Do you have any idea why this is happening?
Thanks,
Teddy
Hi Teddy,
Are you running DS video 1.2 (released a few days ago): the settings page now lets you disable transcoding/remuxing (DS1512+ supports it).
If it’s a MP4/MOV/M4V/MKV, by streaming the original file directly, it might help solve the “choppiness”.
I’d recommend contacting our support team though so they can find the exact root cause:
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
Jeremie
I have just purchased a DS212j and loaded my movies and TV to it. Video Station did a great job indexing these but I have a couple of queries:
Am I able use Video Station from my NAS to a jailbroken Apple TV 2 on my network (as I can with Plex)?
There are a couple of double entries on Video Station. Is there a way to delete the incorrect ones?
Thanks
Phil
Hi Phil.
You shouldn’t be able to use Video Station with a jailbroken Apple TV (haven’t been able to test directly, but it shouldn’t work).
However, we are working on supporting AirPlay through Video Station, so this should solve your problem soon. And the mobile app DS video already supports streaming to Airplay devices.
As for the double entries, you cannot modify them from the interface of Video Station, deleting would need to be done from the File browser.
Hope this helps,
Jeremie
“supporting AirPlay through Video Station”
Very nice. Thumbs up for that one. I look forward to it.
Jeremie, are there any ways to use Video Station in the US to record live TV or link with a TiVo to watch recorded shows via an iPad, other than the recently announced DVBLink which only works overseas?
Hi bbmertz,
I’m afraid in the short term we won’t have this supported (ATSC standard) as we are working on supporting more DVB-T tuners.
But on the long term we definitely want to support tuners for North America so will be looking into it.
Jeremie
Really? You’re priority is to support more DVB-T tuners instead of any ATSC tuners? That’s nice for people in Europe to have some variety but how about not excluding an entire continent. Seems like a big market to ignore, or put on the back burner anyway.
You do have great product by they way. I didn’t mean to sound snippy. I was excited about this feature when I was looking to buy a Diskstation, and disapointed after I got it to realize that there was no support for North American customers. I was further disapointed to hear that it isn’t in development or even planned for any time soon.
Hi Mcgruff,
No worries, of course we would like to support more standards as soon as possible, however adding a support for a standard it’s not a small task, that’s why we try to focus on getting one standard up to scratch rather that trying to do 2 or 3 simultaneously and ending up with everyone unsatisfied.
Jeremie
Jeremief,
More proof of this is that we are working with them to provide the Plex package on all DiskStations (ARM-supported package).
Will you also be working with them to provide a PPC version? It looks like they have no interest in providing a package for this.
I’m very disappointed because I just got the 213+ hoping that it would provide a better DLNA experience (and transcoding), which I thought was one of the major benefits for this device, but at this point I’m left with nothing as neither Plex nor serviio are available for this NAS.
Cheers,
Jurgen
Hi Jurgen,
I can’t tell you for sure what the intentions of Plex are, however according to my colleague who works with them, they are aware we have this platform and are not opposed to providing a PPC package, however, they may not have the resources to provide it immediately as there is no schedule.
I would recommend to any users interested in running Plex on PPC DiskStations to contact Plex directly about this.
Jeremie
To echo a few earlier comments/suggestions –
A toggle-able download link for items in Video Station would be very useful – exactly as how the Audio Station has it.
Also useful would be the ability to group items into collections or series eg. for movie trilogies.
Support of fan-art for backgrounds while browsing would also be nice.
An optional link in each movie record to movie trailers eg. to YouTube be cool.
Otherwise, Video Station is very solid and has an amazingly robust meta-data search.
Hi,
Thanks for your suggestions, have forwarded them to our Product developers. Just to confirm the following one:
“A toggle-able download link for items in Video Station” => I believe you’re mentioning the Offline mode in DS audio? Let me know if I’ve misunderstood.
Thanks,
Jeremie
Regarding a download link for videos, I was referring to implementing it from the Video Station web UI.
However, an offline mode for the DS Video mobile app would of course also be useful to some as well.
Does Video station ever prevent sleep?
I believe it can if you get addicted
Joke aside, if you are mentioning a hibernation problem of your DiskStation after installing the Video Station package, I haven’t heard of this problem. You can contact our support team if necessary:
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
I really like Video Station – the only problem I have is that DVB-C is not supported at the moment. Therefore I installed DVBLink-Server and encountered another problem. Is it not possible to run Video Station and DVLink-Server at the same time. I always have to stop one package to run the other package… or is there a solution for this problem?
Hi,
This is a known limitation, Im afraid both packages cannot run simultaneously.
Jeremie
Hi Jeremi – this blog is a perfect initiative to invite users inside the development of some of your products.
I’m currently considering buying a NAS and have since Synology’s release of Video Station including the Digital TV module (for recording), been looking into the different DS models.
As I understand from most of the users writing this blog, they look forward to seeing broader support for Digital TV system in the module, and I stand in the queue, waiting for some info about the plans for supporting DVB-C and especially a product like HD Homerun and it’s multi-tuner capability.
This is the feature set I want/need before buying Synology products, so are you able to inform us whether this is coming or has it already been tried and found too difficult to support (DVB-C and HD Homerun)?
The products are great – it just needs support for the rest of the world
Thomas
Hi Thomas,
I know many users are waiting for more Digital TV standards.
In the case of DVB-C, we haven’t found it too difficult, but need more time/resources to develop it well.
As for the HD Homerun, we are working on it, so it should be supported in the short term. While I can’t give you a set schedule for when it will be supported, it’s in the works.
Jeremie
Hi Jeremy,
thank you very much for taking time to answer, and keeping our “hopes” up
Should I understand your answer like this: HD Homerun support will be added sooner than DVB-C support? I just thought that these things went together so we need both DVB-C support as well as HD Homerun to use these systems?
How will “support for new tv-systems” be communicated to us, when it’s developed and available? Any mailing lists we can join or do we just have to wait for DSM4.2 og DSM5.0?
kind regards, Thomas
Hi Thomas,
The HD HomeRun model we will be supporting is the EU version, it’s a DVB-T/DVB-C model. DVB-T info will be passed from the API and processed, DVB-C not in the meantime (until we support this standard).
As for availability of new standards, DSM 4.2 it under development, so it’ll probably be the following one. You can get updates by signing up to eNews (Synology newsletter):
https://myds.synology.com/support/register.php
And of course we’ll keep checking user feedback/questions in the comment section of this blog…
Jeremie
Fantastic news. I use the HDHR3-EU already, so now i can just hope for DVB-C support. Is it only a matter of time, not a matter of “IF” its coming?
Do you recommend any of the current models, when considering functionality like recording, transcoding and playing recordes shows on a DLNA-compatible device (TV example).
I look at buying DS412+ or DS413. Any of these more capable of these tasks than the other – more powerfull?
Thomas
Hi Thomas,
In the long term this should be the case, however at this we don’t have a specific plan for which standard would be next (ATSC, is also very popular for instance).
Regarding our models, for anyone who’ll be streaming a lot (using Video Station or Plex) I would recommend a model supporting transcoding. The DS412+ and DS713+ for example.
They are a bit more expensive, but will be best in that respect.
You might want to consider a DS413, DS213+ or DS213 which support remuxing (of mkv files) if your budget is more limited. However, please note that they don’t transcode.
Last point: all DiskStations stream DLNA devices’ contents by installing the Media Server package, so you’ll have that no matter which DiskStation you choose to buy.
I hope this helps.
Jeremie
Hi Jeremi,
I plan to add the “TV recorder” behavior to my DS209, and I have several questions before purchasing the TV Tuner USB Key.
What is the format of the video of a recorded HD chanel ? are they recorded in SD mode or HD mode (720p or 1080i) ?
Do you know if my DS209 can support the HD recording ?
Stéphane
Hi Stéphane,
The format for the recording is MPEG2, if the channel is in HD, your DS209 will record it in HD. However, when playing it, through DS video, you will need to have installed OPlayer lite or GPlayer (As the DS209 doesn’t transcode). The actual quality then depends on the player’s capabilities.
Hope this helps.
Jeremie
Hi Jeremie,
Thank you for your answer.
The files will not be played through DS Video, but by a DLNA TV.
DS Video will be used only to record films : then I will make a post production work in order to remove publicity and perhaps re-encode the file in H264 format in order to reduce the size of the file.
Regards.
Stéphane
awesome!
I like Plex interface, but I like neat good looking DS video too.
My 2 cents: would be very nice to be able to choose subtitle colour. White subs interfere with opening and ending credits (mainly white), so choosing yellow or green subs would be great!
thanks
Thank you for the suggestion, will forward to our developers.

Need DS Audio App For Windows 8 RT ASAP!
I actually can’t believe it wasn’t out “Day 1″ since I know Micro$oft had release candidates and consumer previews of the OS available for over a year now…
Hi Craig,
I’m glad to see your enthusiasm to use our apps on Windows RT devices. We will certainly be planning this in the future, however bringing an app to a new platform isn’t exactly a small task, so I’m afraid it will take some time before they are available.
Jeremie
Jere,
Could you give me a bit of a timeline/guesstimate for said Windows 8 app to come to fruition? A month? 6 months? I’m sure some of the code from the Windows Phone version could help move things along, right?
Speaking of which, now that the XBOX 360 (per the last firmware update) supports “Play To” digital media renderer functionality (Praise The Lord! Let every nation rejoice, since I’ve been begging Microsoft for it!) it shows up in both the Windows Phone & Android version of the DS Audio app but when I select as a renderer/streamer the XBOX just keeps trying to load the song but never begins playback of MP3 files… Can you guys confirm I’m not going nuts? Western Digital TV Live works fine via DLNA and Apple TV via AirPlay from both apps…
Hi Craig,
Sorry for the late reply, we were checking the XBOX issue, and indeed have the same loading problem as you described. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
For the Windows RT support, it won’t be with DSM 4.2 and as we generally have 2 major DSM release/year, I’d say it should be closer to 6months.
6 months to get a simple personal cloud music app on my Vivo RT Tab makes me a very sad panda…
Is there a set of instructions for how to
1. install a dongle
…… up to ….
x. view on computer?
Hi Picaza,
To install the dongle, as the process is relatively simple, we haven’t created a specific guide: it’s explained in the Video Station help.
Basically, all you need to do is connect the DVB-T dongle to a usb port of the DiskStation. We have already integrated the drivers for all supported dongles in Video Station (you don’t need to run the CD like on the computer).
When you launch Video Station, all you need to do is select a folder for your TV recordings and run a scan to make the channels appear in the TV program.
To view on a computer… If you mean to install the dongle, you’ll need to refer to the manufacturers instructions for the specific dongle you bought. If you mean live streaming, you’ll need to be logged in as admin, select Live streaming and paste the url into the VLC player you have installed on the computer. This step is a bit awkward and we are working on simplifying it so users can do everything form the interface without opening VLC and doing any “copy-paste”.
Hope it helps,
Jeremie
Thanks Jeremie –
one more question -
To put on Video Station, do I need my original install disc(s), or download, or is that just available for simple install?
Thanks –
Picaza
Hi Picaza,
All the drivers have been integrated, so you don’t need the disc or to download anything.
Opps, I need to update to 4.1, that’s why no “Video Station”. I hope to try this all out over the weekend. A little nervous that some folk seemed to have trouble with the update to 4.1, but I have no add-ons and just media server turned on so crossing fingers.
This only has extra use for me if there was a smart tv app to with it. It would be a killer app. In my case I ‘d like to see one for Samsung smarttv.
Thanks for your feedback, I’ll forward this to our Product development team.
Jeremie
Hi, I live in Czech Republic and I am using Synology DS213+ and TV tuner Pinnacle PCTV Nano Stick 73e.
I am encountering problem with tuning up the TV channels which were released during last approximately half year.
Is it possible, that tunning TV channels is depending on some kind of list? Is it possible to make actualization somehow?
Thanks, Karel
Hi Dotek,
You’re correct, we have got a frequency list that may need to be adapted: problems for larger countries with many Synology users will be quickly identified as we get feedback very quickly. So I’d encourage you to contact our support team so we improve this for the Czech Republic.

Hi,
Just bought an IPAD 4 and tryiing to pley locally a video downloaded from my DS212J NAS.
I installed DS Video, DS File and Gplayer.
I downloaded an .avi file with DSFile (no idea where it is stored on IPAD). If I click on it with DSFile, a gplayer icon appear but don’t play video!
The same video can be played directly with Gplayer using DSVideo and GPlayer (directly in DLNA).
Please any solution?
Thank you.
Hi Ulysse21,
Unless it’s a problem specific to the iPad4, it should be a bug, I’ve just checked and can “open with” GPlayer/Oplayer” in DS file (with an iPad3) without any problems.
Feel welcome to contact our support engineers for help so we can check this issue:
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
Thanks
Thank you very much for Video Station. It’s a very useful application.
But to make a TV recording, the only way is through Program Guide. It would be great if one could choose simply the channel, start time and lenght of the recording.
Would it be possible in next versions?
Thank you very much.
Thanks for the feedback Caribdis, I’ll pass it to our engineers.
I know some users have requested this as sometimes the EPG and the TV station aren’t in sync, so the beginning/end of the program isn’t recorded. If this is your case too, you can use the 2 options “start recording earlier” and ” stop recording after” which you ca find in the settings (TV recording tab).
Let me know if this doesn’t solve your problem.
Jeremie
Thanks, Jeremie. Yes, I know the possibility of extending the recording, but this is not the only problem. I don’t know in other countries, but in Spain a lot of DVB channels don’t have EPG, and in others the EPG is not real.
It would be much mor interesting to manually select the channel, the start time and the lenght, as you can do with the majority of programs like that, as Windows Media Center, Media Portal, etc.
Thanks a lot.
Hi Caribdis,
Thanks for your explanation, makes sense indeed. I’ll forward it to our team.
Thanks Synology for a great NAS! I had a 207+ and upgraded to a 212j primarily for the DS Video app …and I’m extremely impressed with what you guys have done.
Highest up on my NAS/Christmas wish list is support for using a video-file’s own imbedded meta data i.e titles and cover-art.
Hi Krugster, not sure if we can implement it in the short term, but we’ll definitely consider it and it would indeed be great to have.
Thanks for the feedback!
Jeremief,
I have a DS110j but I am not very “techie” so I don’t understand all the comments above. I was able to watch videos connected to my home network on my ipad (first version) using Buzz Player HD.. For some reason I can’t get Buzz Player to work any more. What is the best (easiest) solution for me to watch movies located on my Diskstation on my ipad while connected to my home wifi?
Thanks
Hi Dasv,
You can use DS video to watch (on your iPad) any movies/vids stored on the DS110j, simply:
1) install Video Station in the DSM Package center
2) place your movies/TV shows. in the correct folder (you can choose which ones to index)
3) install DS video on your iPad from the App store, then log in with the DiskStation’s IP address + user credentials.
Alternatively, you can use Plex (also available in the package center) or other apps like iMedia Share
Hope it helps,
Jeremie
Can you add this to the list of requested dongles -
Hauppauge 1191 WinTV-HVR-950Q
Thanks for the suggestion, we will purchase it to test it.
Thanks!
Let’s say I want to set this up so I can record TV and later watch via “media server” (on ps3 for me) –
My guess is I’d want to make a folder under the top-level “video” folder for the “TV RECORDING FOLDER”
Is that correct?
Sure, that’s correct. You can use the ps3 to watch videos placed in that folder (or inside the video folder in general), however note that currently, the metadata you see in Video Station won’t be displayed through Media Server. It’s only displayed through Video Station.
Hello guy’s I’m have a ton of .m4v movies on my 211, these are all converted with handbrake for my appleTV, and my AppleTV plays them well from my itunes library.
Now with DSVideo the need for starting up a computer to get itunes running is gone… (thank God) But…
With DS video the movie will NOT play with dolby digital over airplay… the strange thing is when I launch DS file and tap the movie it starts to play to my AppleTV WITH DOLBY DIGITAL… Just Perfect !!!
Why can’t DS video do this?
and yes I tried all options with remix audio etc… but remuxing gives you only stereo audio and I want the dolby digital ac3 signal.
Thanks,
Johnny
Hi,
I am having very similar problems with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, which rarely work at all. Please add / improve support of those standards, they are getting really widespread. Lots of people out there with av-receivers and 5.1 setups!
I always have to start up a PC, start VLC and open the movie from the SMB share on the DS – kind of sucks.
Thanks,
Frank
Hi. Im having some problems getting started.
I have Synology 212j and all my movies are stored on it. Have just upgraded to DSM 4.1 to be able to use video station. After launch for 1st time I am prompted to create folders. All OK so far, but having created Movie, TV show and Home video, nothing happens! I get no further promt or instruction. The folder creation screen just stays put and I cannot click off it. Any ideas what is happening. Instructions are not clear.
Hi,
I’m not sure if you are still experiencing this problem, if so, I’d recommend contacting our Technical support team for help on this issue:
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
Thanks!
Hi
Yes I have contacted Tech support.
Thanks
Hi,
I got two Synology, a DS209+ and DS1511+.
On the both I activate the Video Station Service.
On my iPAD 3, I got DS Video application.
When I connect to the DS 1511+ all is working good.
But when I connect to the DS 209+, when I play the same video files, I got an error message.
This file format can’t be read. Try to use another software.
Strange.
Thanks for your help
It seems that the problem come from the real time video conversion.
The AVI files are transcoded Under the DS 1511+, but the DS209+ is unable to do that ?
Thanks for your help
Yes, that’s the case, the DS1511+ has an intel CPU (floating point) which can transcode, the DS209+ doesn’t.
To stream these files with the DS209+, either:
-convert all your files to MP4 (time consuming)
-install OPlayer lite or Gplayer on your iPad, DS video will open these players and Avi should play without problem.
Hope it helps.
Hi Jeremie,
I currently reside in Adelaide, Australia and would like to report on some issues with live-tv on video station.
I have the 8-bay DS-1812+ and I am very happy with its performance. The addition of Videostation for live-tv is a real bonus as it allows the removal of other hardware from a network. However, after completing the setup using an Eyetv DTT TV Tuner Stick I firstly noticed that not all stations were found and of the ones found only about 1 in 4 actually work. I have seen other forum where others (in Australia and other countries) have reported similar issues as this and there seems to be no definite way to fix the issue under the current program. Therefore, I was wondering if/and when a fix for these issues will be coming?
Secondly, I have noticed another product you have called DVBLogic but my DS-1812+ is not on the list of supported units, will this be changing?
cheers,
Jayson
Hello Jayson,
Thanks for your feedback about this, I remember the forum threads in question (about Australia) were often users from Melbourne, as the frequencies may be different for Adelaide, I would recommend you report this to our team (we may not have had so many cases from Adelaide as it’s a smaller city so even one user reporting can help a lot):
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
As for DVB Link, as it’s a 3rd party package, I would recommend contacting them directly to let them know about your request for more supported models:
http://dvblogic.com/en/about
Br,
Jeremie
Hi Jeremie,
thanks for the reply. I have left a support ticket as suggested. You are correct on the forum, they were mostly from Melbourne (and Canberra I think from memory). Will report back here as we work through the issue (I am hopeful that it is merely a config file change needed on initial scan).
Cheers,
Jays
I did start to use Video Station on Windows 8 this week. I am using it with Chrome.
Everything was running fine until I did restart Chrome in “Windows 8 mode”.
Then I started to get the message “VLC plugin not installed”.
Back to the Desktop mode, everything was running fine again.
Any idea if there is a way to make it works in the “windows 8 mode” ? I know this is not directly related to the Video Station but I would love to have access to all my DSM stations from the Start Screen in that “windows 8 mode”
V.
Hi Vletroye,
I’m afraid at this stage this may not be possible, as currently only plug-ins using Pepper API will be supported:
http://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2762879
I don’t know of any work around, if you learn of one, please let us know.
Thanks,
Jeremie
Hey Jeremie,
I have may a few previous comments about synology supports silicon dust hd home run above, for multiple tuner support, and support for US Encrypted cable channels. I wanted to know if you all have made any progress on integrating that with synology. I also wanted to let you know that on top of the c, c++ api that silicondust has to control the device, they have released a press release about their soon to be upgraded firmware that will allow hd homerun to be fully DLNA compliment, which may serve as another way to integrate the hd homerun into synology… They have also said that they will be releasing more news / features of future hd homerun improvement at CES 2013 in January. I know u guys will be there and from the synology facebook page maybe hints at DSM 4.2
cheers, happy holidays, and you and the rest of synology keep up the good work.
Steve
Hi Steve,
We have been working on SiliconDust products. I believe you are based in the US, support for that region may not be as fast as for Europe for technical reasons, but it’s planned.
Many thanks for the info about the coming DLNA support for the HDHR “Prime”, hopefully we can leverage that!
Have a very nice Christmas too!

Lots of great info here. I am trying to sort out the simplest way to stream my home movies (DV 720×640, HD, both of which are in .mp4 format) to my TV. I have an iPad 2, but would prefer not to mirror via Airplay, as iPad2 does not have HD. I have Roku and AppleTV 3 devices. Thought I would use Plex, but my DS410 uses PPC processor, not ARM or Intel.
Is there a simple way to use DS File, Video Station or Media Station with the AppleTV or Roku device? Jailbreaking the AppleTV with aTV Flash seems like an option but would prefer to use a more “out-of-box” solution. Thanks!
Hi Tim,
Sorry for my late reply.
I believe the iPad2 should support HD (720) when mirroring, however FullHD (1080) will indeed not be possible.
http://www.apple.com/uk/ipad/ipad-2/specs.html
After a quick test on a HD video, our iPad2 and iPad 3 gave the same image quality.
As for an out-of-box solution, you should soon be able to use your Apple TV with Video Station (hopefully with the next release). However, Roku shouldn’t be possible as it’s not DLNA compatible.
Hope this helps,
Jeremie
Jeremie,
Thanks for the reply – it was very prompt considering the holiday season.
You are right – iPad 2 at 720p should be fine. I will give this a try.
I found 2 ways for the Roku to work:
1) Install Plex on Windows PC. Map Synology folder containing videos as a network drive on Windows PC. Plex will recognize the mapped network drive and play videos.
2) Use the Roku USB channel. Just transfer NAS media files to a USB flash drive and plug into the Roku. Obviously defeats the purpose of Synology NAS as media server, but at least it works. Sometimes low-tech is OK.
AppleTV support in DSM 4.2 would be great.
Thanks again for your support. Synology is great!
-Tim
Roksbox is a better alternative if Plex is not for your model of DS…just uses HTTP service
HI, just wanted to make few suggestions about video station:
1. translation error:
in video station / TV recording / settings / TV recording:
The translation of “stop recording after” is wrong in french, it is written “Arrêter l’enregistrement plus tôt” but is should be “Arrêter l’enregistrement plus tard” because as it is now the meaning is completely opposite.
2. Are you planning to add the fonctionnality of directly importing XMLTV files (either from a local file or from a website) to the EPG of video station?
http://wiki.xmltv.org/index.php/Main_Page
It could then be possible to have a more useful EPG, because many broadcasters only send EPG for the current day, or no EPG at all.
3. Could it be possible to manually add custom TV channel? My synology doesn’t find one channel (maybe because the signal is sometimes too low) and i want to add it manually
Thanks!
Hi, thanks for pointing out the typo and giving us your feedback.
As for the feature requests while we don’t have a timeline for their implementation, I have passed them to the Product Development team.
Jeremie
great app!
I have one question about the iOS players though – I see you support the HDplayer and some other. But I have Good player, and other folks may have another players.
Is it possible to have the “open with…” type of dialog, so that user can choose it’s own player? The setting can then be remembered for future use.
another player to consider would be the cinexplayer, which (for whatever reasons) is the only one with AC3 support for iOS now
thanks!
Thanks for your feedback, will forward these suggestions concerning players to our Product developers.
Jeremie
Just a quick update about this player, unfortunately, there seems to be no API for us to integrate it, for this reason it won’t be possible to support it.
Thanks,
jeremie
Thats a shame about Cinexplayer! Any chance that Buzz Player might be useable?
Hi, great product, and was working great until recently.
For some it has stopped indexing any new films I add. I am not doing anything different, in fact I’m even adding to existing folders. Also if I try to edit the video info using the internet it just continually searches.
Hope you can help
Doesn’t matter, just needed a reboot. Working again thanks.
Would just like to re-emphasize a few improvements to video station though.
Please let us add imdb addresses to make editing titles easier. And please let us have folder view with maybe an icon for the folder.
Hi Borospark,
Glad to hear the reboot fixed it. If it happened again, you can check the index daemon is running correctly as follows:
1-telnet to DS
>grep synoindex: If the “synoindexd” daemon isn’t running, use the foolowing command(/usr/syno/etc/rc.d/S66synoindexd.sh start).
>grep synovideo: If the following two deamons aren’t running: “synovideoindexd , synovideometadatad”, you will need to restart Video Station.
Alternatively (and if you are not too keen on taking a dive in to the abyss with Telnet), you’re more than welcome to contact our support team:
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
And thanks for your feature suggestions, well noted,
Jeremie
Hi, thanks for that but you might as well be talking Latin! It was just because my router accidently got turned off before so I had to reboot the NAS to reconnect.
Are we any closer to an android app, preferably jellybean?
Hi Borospark,
Just posted it for users familiar with Telnet who like to troubleshoot themselves, do contact us directly if you have any other problems with DS video/Video Station.
As for the Android app, it is indeed under development and should be available soon.
Hello,
I was wondering how the video info search is actually performed? The information about what I actually store on my NAS is obviously quite sensitive. Are filenames being sent to Synology for search purposes? To Google? To IMDb? Are any parts of those search requests logged anywhere?
Thanks in advance
Hello Sunshifter,
No log/storage of the search data is made by Synology or any third party.
Also the search mechanism doesn’t sent the file names directly: it decomposes the file name and detects key words (all this is done “inside” in DSM), which are only then sent to the database to find any matching results.
A last point is that the search is only carried out on files within the video/movie and video/TV show folders, not on any other folder of the NAS.
I hope this helps understand the mechanism better.
Jeremie
Hi Jeremie
i like the update information for movie. But is there a possibility to change the settings/source of information or turn it off if the online information is wrong and i don´t want?
Plus, since i´m storing a lot of camcorder videos on the station, can i prevent that they will be checked for online metadata as well? Or is this already done by default with content of the private video folder?
thanks,
Curt
Hi Curt,
Concerning the option to disable the search function/change the settings source, it’s not possible currently, but we are aware some users have complete embedded metadata and will do our best to implement these options in the future. If you have any suggestions about this, do feel welcome to let us know.
As or the folders which are concerned by the search, it’s only the two which you choose to index for movies and TV shows, not any other.
Jeremie
Hi,
I really love the Video Sation package. But now I ran into some problems. All my content was scanned in English. Yesterday I found out I could set that to Dutch (I’m from Belgium). So I set it to Dutch, selected my TV Show folder (in settings), chose index again -> research all video information (don’t know what the exact string is in English since my system language is set to Dutch). Today I checked back, and indeed, the TV Shows that are available in Dutch on thetvdb are now in Dutch. Exellent!
But, for some reason I now have some new shows that I don’t even have. So for example the show ‘Revenge’ is now split into Revenge (correct) S01E01-S01E10 and “20/20 Revenge For Real” (what!?) S01E11 – S02E09. All the episodes have the same name formatting and my folder structure is like this “showname/Season 1/episode.s01e01.blabla.mkv”. Also, overnight Chuck became “The Adventures of Chuck & Friends” (all the episode’s!). Friends is split into 3 shows, Lost is split in 2, Dallas (2012) became Dallas (the old one), but my foldername is ‘Dallas (2012)’, etc …
I didn’t have any of this since I use (since the release a few months ago) Video Station. But the worst things is when I try to correct the information by manually searching trough “edit metainformation’ it goes back to being wrong after 15 mins or less
It would be perfect if you could lock that metainformation.
Can you please provide my with some information or help me with reporting these issues?
Hi,
This seems like a matching problem with the database, if you could contact our Support team it will help us investigate this issues.
http://www.synology.com/support/beta_form_4.2.php?lang=enu (I imagine you are running DSM 4.2 Beta)
Thanks for reporting this, and I’ve forwarding your suggestion to our engineering team.
Br,
Jeremie
Ok,
I just did, thanks for replying!
Hope this one gets fixed soon.

Hello, i have bought a Synology DS213+, and i have install Video Station on the Synology and DS Video on my iPad 4th gen, i have some question, i’m italian and i have add all my movie collection to video station, my the movie metadata found in english, and change the name for a lot of film the doens’t find in a similar film he found, there is a way to retrieve the metadata information in italian language? then i have another question, i have tried to open a movie in mkv of 10-15GB and the audio go very well, but the video block a lot of time, every 2-3 second for example, change for the movie, but every movie blocks, you fix this problem in future release? i have also read in the FAQ of the App that i can disable the transcoding and remuxing, but disable that option the ds Video tell me that can’t play the format…how i can do?
Hi Piero,
To answer your questions:
1-Multilingual metadata should be supported with Video Station 1.1, if the search results are inconsistent, it may be due to the films not being in our Database. If they aren’t, the default result will be in English. If you still feel there is a problem (very famous films for example) I’d recommend getting in touch with our support team so we improve this.
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
2-The video blocks a lot: this could be due to the network being insufficient: in DS video, you can go to the settings and choose auto or low quality to see if it helps. If it doesn’t, again getting in touch with our team will help us a lot to know what the problem is.
3-If you disable remuxing, you will need a third party player which you can download (free) in the App store: Oplayer lite or GPlayer. Ace Player works but I believe it’s no longer free…
I hope this helps, let us know any other feedback you have!
Jeremie
Thanks for the answers!
1- when comes out Video Station 1.1 for multilingual metadata?
2-3 -i will try to get the low quality but i doens’t know if this could help because i can hear the audio go normally, the problem it’s with the video that block very frequently, but i will try to change that option, if i have problem i contact on the support forum
Hi Piero,
Video Station 1.1 Beta is already available, you don’t have to upgrade to DSM 4.2 Beta, just go to the Package Centre and upgrade the Video Station Package.
Then, in Video Station, go to the “settings”, select the Movies or TV show folder then select “edit”, finally choose a language for the metadata.
Don’t forget to relaunch the metadata search and reopen Video Station to see the new metadata.
Hope it helps,
Jeremie
Thanks for the answer, but i can’t find the 1.1 Version, if i go in Package Centre, i can’t see any update…i only see that the Video Station is running, and if i enter in the details i can see only the uninstall button…how i can do?
ok i have see it
Last question i have see in the change log that now it’s possible play in Apple TV, so my question is i can also play mkv files?
Hi Piero,
As your Synology DS213+ supports remuxing, mkv files will be sent to the Apple TV. (remuxing is roughly equivalent to transcoding, but on the audio part of the file).
Jeremie
Hi Synology Team!
I really appreciate the hard work that you do for your customers and i really like videostation!
I’ve got a couple of suggestions, its up to you, to do something with it
These are vere handy features from couchpotato;
1. (automatic) Subtitle search from sites like bierdopje.com and opensubtitles.org
2. Ad movies from a search to download station, and make it look for better quality, just like couchpotato
Excuses me for my bad english
Gr from Holland
Hi,
Thanks for these enhancement suggestions, I’ve forwarded this to our Video Station team, hope we can see them implemented in the future.
Jeremie
Hey Everyone! This is a post CES update, loved Synology’s booth and new features at CES and the new beta release of DSM 4.2 + new video station android app, great work guys.
I also wanted to update you on the fact that silicondust has their new DLNA beta firmware… Also the have some up coming models that support 4 tuners, and transcoding from mpeg2 to h264 adding more support for other devices, this may one day solve a lot of Diskstation users problems so that the disk station hardware is not tasked with doing the transconding. J if i am not mistaken i believe the HD homerun prime can support both DVBT and cable card streams, so u may be able to start integrating that from wherever you are. I also ran across a good youtube video from ces speaking about wanting to work with NAS companies about providing integration and DVR support which may interest you guys as well:

Steve
Hi
It would be great if video station could add support to get the file metadata from. Nfo (xbmc) file format. This file format is well known from many video indexing software.
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Import-export_library
Thanks
Romain
Thanks for your suggestion, I’ve forwarded this to our engineering team!
Hi Jeremie, very happy with my DS213+ and all the work you guys are putting in. I like the concept of video station but when I play videos to my AppleTV3 via my Mac book pro, I notice a reduction in audio quality compared to say just using the media server direct to my ps3, particulary for mkv files. Why is this happening?
Hi Mikesala,
This should be due to the fact that the mkv files are transcoded in both cases, however, Video Station will transcode the audio to AAC, whereas with the Media Server, the output is AC3. The Media Server transcodes the audio to AC3 because it needs to be compatible with Sony devices which impose this constraint, Video Station on the other hand does not and can transcode the audio to AAC (for the ATV).
Hope it helps.
Hi I’ve only just bought my ds212j and really like it.
But video station seems to be consistently misidentifying the films and TV programmes. Embarrassingly so.
An episode of the TV series “The Killing” is labelled as a video by Christina Aguilera, another is “I still know what you did last summer” another is “Ghosts of Girlfriends past” An Episode of “In Treatment” is a rom com called “It takes two”
How can I get rid of these?
Oh and how can I get the recorded TV programmes to play back. They come out 1/4 screen on my LG TV and on my Mac & PC it comes up with “the video format is not supported”
Thanks
Hi Philip,
Regarding these problems, you can correct them manually, however, if you could report them to our support team this will help us solve them in the long-term for all users.
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
As for the TV programmes, they are recorded to .ts, not mp4. This means the player must be able to read that format, I believe installing VLC will solve this when playing on a PC, on a Mac, this is a current limitation as you can’t run VLC on it.
Jeremie
Oh, quick update: though the LG TV supports Google Play, we don’t officially support it as the apps need “touch screen capabilities”
Hi, I trying Video Station beta 1.1 and cannot find any way to import existing library (classic disk folders) to VS. I have hundreds folders whith thousands subolders and items, all stored on \volume1\video – is impossible add all of them manually and autoindexing of entire structure ignores subfolders, so is unusable (and i have no free year or two to wait for getting metadata too). Can you help me? BTW, I’m developer and i can create some tool for direct management, if you can give me some info about storing data in VS.
Thanks.
Hi Ghorx,
If you are using Video Station 1.1 (still in Beta), you can use the “by folder” display to browse your library according to folders. Also, you can simply copy your entire library to the Home Video folder, this way it will not index videos as films/TV shows.
I hope this helps, please let me know if you still have any questions.
Jeremie
Hello, i’m trying to see some tv show in mkv format with srt subtitles, but on DS Video on iPad the subtitles is always out of syncronization…if i see it on a computer works fine…there is a way to solve this problem?
Hi Piero87,
If I’m correct you have a DS213+, this is a DiskStation which can remux mkv files. Our engineers have already solved a similar bug (you can test when we release DSM 4.2 official).
However, it was detected on DS video and Video Station. As you seem to not have this issue with Video Station on your PC, it may be different, I would recommend getting in touch and reporting this to our support team:
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
Thanks for the answer:)…i have send an email at the support, when come out the 4.2?:)
Hi,
I have a few “I wonder why’s/good ideas”:
1. Video Station | Schedule | HDhomerun 1 | Program Guide: I have a list of more than 200 channels. Some of them are useable many are not. Why not make a favorite list of channels, so you can filter out channels you never see?
2. Video Station | Schedule | HDHomerun 1 | Program Guide: Why don’t you show the list of programs (EPG) starting with the current time/program running at the given time you enter the guide. It always starts at midnight even if you look e.g. 3:00 PM. Annoying.
3. Why isn’t it possible to set a recording using DS video from an iPhone? I think it would be a good idea to add this feature.
4. It is possible to subscribe to a XMLTV e.g. timefor.tv feed to have a complete EPG guide. Why isn’t it possible to use this in Video Station, since many station miss EPG information. I miss this feature.
5. Why isn’t it possible in Video Station to combine e.g. 2 TV tuners, so you don’t always have to decide between Video Station | Schedule | HDHomerun 1 or Video Station | Schedule | HDHomerun 2. I mean you only have to show one and only one schedule, and then show the different tuners by a specific color. E.g. scheduled recordings by tuner 1 blue as of today and then change to another color when a scheduled record for tuner 2 is shown. Alternatively do this automatically – as in always use tuner 1 when the Video Sstation are recording a program, and if another timer overlaps tuner 1 is will use tuner 2 automatically.
6. Why isn’t it possible to make a manual recording by simply selecting a channel and type the start and stop time, with an option of recurrence?
Equipment: DiskStation 211+, Yousee cable (Danish Provider), HDHomerun
Hi Mikker1,
Thanks for all this feedback, some answers below:
1-Why not make a favorite list of channels, so you can filter out channels you never see?
=>it’s forwarded to our engineers
2- It always starts at midnight even if you look e.g. 3:00 PM. Annoying.
=>Are you mentioning Video Station or DS video? To my knowledge, it has been changed on the Android and WP versions of DS video, though not on iOS. As for Video Station, my EPG aren’t long enough to confirm, but it also seems to be the case. As a workaround in the meantime, you can simply enlarge the window.
3-Why isn’t it possible to set a recording using DS video from an iPhone?
=>The user flow has slightly changed for the iPhone in the latest version, if a DVB-T dongle is plugged on to your DS, just go to the TV recording tab and select the TV icon (the one on the upper left hand side), then choose Recording settings and you’ll have both the EPG and your recording schedule. The iPad version hasn’t been modified.
4-subscribe to a XMLTV e.g. timefor.tv feed to have a complete EPG guide
=>forwarded to our engineers
5-Combine tuners, only one schedule
6-Why isn’t it possible to make a manual recording by simply selecting a channel
=>These 2 are the current design, it’s forwarded to our team.
Hi Jeremi,
Thanks for your reply.
Ad 1) Thanks
Ad 2) Video Station in a browser.
Ad 3) You’re right. Thanks:-)
Ad 4) I pray that this has high priority, as it is crusial to make intelligent recordings. In my situation I can only find EPG info in two channels out of > 100 visible channels.
Ad 5) I do not understand. Can they be combined?
Ad 6) When no EPG info is available, is this feature mandatory. The predefined 30 min slots available in the current design does not leave the user many options.
Hi.
I’ve installed the DS Video app on my Galaxy Nexus. I’ve installed Video Station 1.1 beta on my DS213. The video streams perfectly to my phone from my DS213, but the audio does not come thru.
I’ve tested this on the Nexus 7 with the same issue. Perfect video, no audio.
I tested it on an iPad 3 — both the video & audio work flawlessly.
Any advice on what is going on with the DS Video app on the android platform?
Thanks!
Hi,
Which players have you got installed on these 2 Android devices?
We recommend installing MX Player even if it isn’t the player installed by default on your phone as it gives the best user experience.
If you don’t want to use MX Player, please contact our support team for them to check:

Hello,
I´m waiting very hard for DSM 4.2. A beta version I have seen, now, but which kind of DVB Tuner are now supported please? I can only find this information.
Thx,

Hi Jeremie,
Will the elgato eyetv one be supported in the final dsm 4.2 version?
This is the only dvb-t supported by kpn digitenne in the Netherlands.
Best regards Ray
Hi Raybaby,
This specific stick failed the compatibility tests I believe. I would need to confirm the exact cause with our engineer, but if it’s due to the drivers, I would encourage users to contact Elgato directly to request drivers compatible with our DiskStations.
Thanks
Jeremie,
Loving Diskstation but have a STRANGE issue. I use MediaCenterMaster to organize my files. I mapped my /video drive to my computer so that MCM could access it and I renamed my files to the convention Videostation needed. Now when I go to play a file I am given the option of 2 files to play. My old one and the new one renamed. Each is also listed in a separate directory with the name of each file but there is only one directory and only one file there. Why would it be listing twice? I tried rebooting, turning off video station and restarting and no luck.
Thanks,
Bret
Hi Bret,
You might need to contact our support team for them to check this.
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
Thanks.
Hi everybody,
is it possible with the current version of DS Video and Video Station, to display different library content in DS Video, based on the user that are logged in? I’ve tried about everything (even updated to 4.2b) with ACL, different shared folders, different users and permissions to view only a specific, but nothing have worked for me.
It’s obviously a login for my kid’s ipad i’m thinking about. Currently he can see everything in the library (both normal movies and cartoons).
Maybe it isn’t possible?
Found this somewhat outdated lighting-review of DS, which states that this isn’t possible, but will this change?
http://www.totalhtpc.com/synology-video-station-lighting-review-not-ready-for-prime-time/
Regards, Thomas
Hi Thomas,
We haven’t implemented “Personal Video Station”, but we’ve noted your request.
Thanks.
What about the rest of the followers in here, is this a needed competitive feature or have you guys solved this problem in another fashion? Other programs, features? PlexMediaServer?
Thomas
Hello, it’s me again:) i want know if it’s possible see the meta information of the movies that video station find, also in a samsung Smart tv, for now i have connect the tv with the LAN and i see the movie with the dlna, but i can see only the file name, there is a way to see also the other information? Like plot actor etc?
Hi piero87,
The metadata of Video Station is stored in an independent database, meaning that it doesn’t impact the file itself. it’s only visible through Video Station.
About your second question, I’m not sure I understand it well, but if you are trying to view the Video Station metadata through the DLNA function, that’s not possible.
However, Video Station should soon allow this, you can then test your Samsung TV with it and let us know if you still have problems.
Thanks. Jeremie
Hi Jeremief,
–> However, Video Station should soon allow this, you can then test your Samsung TV with it and let us know if you still have problems.
Can you elaborate? How will it be possible to display metadata through DLNA with Video Station? An Video Station app for Samsung Smart TVs?
Regards, Thomas
Hi Thomas,
This thread will give you more info, it’ll be an extension of the current function allowing to steam to an Apple TV.
http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=225&t=62261&hilit=Video+Station+to+support+streaming+videos+to+Apple+TV&start=45
Hi Jeremief,
i think you replied on a different issue here. I were asking into Piero87 question about being able to see metadata directly from the Synology and onto Samsung TV through the DLNA protocol.
And since you replied:
“However, Video Station should soon allow this, you can then test your Samsung TV with it and let us know if you still have problems.”
I thought that sounded incredible and worthwhile the wait, but you then responded with direct streaming to an ATV device, and not the Samsung TV.
Thomas
Hi,
I’m little bit disappointed about not being able to live stream TV with Video Station on ARM CPUs.
Are there any plans for extending that option to non-x86 processors?
Alan
Hi Alan,
Are you referring to the article’s note: “streaming is available on x86-DiskStation models”?
=>We added this as many users will be using their iPads/iPhones to stream, for which ARM cpu will be more problematic as they can’t transcode the stream However, you can still stream by installing a 3rd party player on the iOS device.
=>If you are using Video Station, with VLC installed on the computer, this won’t be a problem with an ARM machine.
If you already have an ARM DiskStation and have tried the 2 points above, please contact our support engineers for them to check why you are having this issue.
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
Thanks
Hi Jeremief,
I’m not iOS device user. So we can ignore that problem.
In my case I was referring to Video Station Live TV DVB watching. Even having VLC I cannot see the live programs. I can record and after that view them but no live watching.
So my question was “Are there any plans to allow non-x86 CPU to use video-station as live TV previewer?”
Regards,
Alan
Hi Alan,
Double checked with our engineers and just tested it on a DS213 (which is an ARM machine).
You can definitely do live streaming from Video Station if you have VLC installed on the PC.
I’m sorry you’re having problems not being able to run the service properly, again I would recommend you to get in touch with our support them for them to help you solve this.

hi jeremy,
i have a basic question. i have a ds213 with videostation on it. i currently have it connected to my router, and the router connected to my TV. through the wired router connection i can access my videos on the TV.
my question is, can i connect the TV to the diskstation vis a USB cable and and watch movies through that connection, the way i can use a USB to send music directly from the station to a DAC/amp?
i would like to keep my TV off the internet connection.
thanks.
Hi Bracque,
This should be possible with a USB connection using the Media server.
Using Video Station, it might be possible with an AppleTV (though I haven’t tested myself).
Hi, I believe I found s bug. Running Video Station on iphone Ios 6.1. When streaming video via apple tv3 video is great but the subtitles(str) are shown on the iphone instad on the tv.
Have a look on it.
Thx.
Hi Oliver,
Thank you for reporting this to us. This is a known issue, unfortunately we cannot do anything a bout it as you are using the Airplay function which is a native iOS function, therefore only Apple can fix it.
However, as a workaround: iOS DS video will soon support the remote mode (already available on Android and Windows Phone). Using the remote mode to stream to an ATV will pass the subtitles to the ATV.
This will be available with DSM 4.2 official.
Jeremie
thanks jeremy.
so if i understand this correctly, video station lets me use my ipad for example to watch something on my DS312 directly on the ipad by streaming. if i don’t care about this i don’t need videostation.
if i want to connect the USB, i just need media server and i select output USB?
so i can have 1 usb connecting the DS312 to my stereo for music, and another usb connecting the drive to my TV, and that’s it?
thanks.
Hi Bracque,
I made a mistake in my first reply: you can connect the Synology and the TV directly, but not with a USB cable, only with a network cable (RJ45).
“video station lets me use my ipad for example to watch something on my DS312 directly on the ipad by streaming. if i don’t care about this i don’t need videostation.” => yes, that’s correct
“if i want to connect the USB, i just need media server and i select output USB?” =>As mentioned, it works with a RJ45, not a USB cable
so i can have 1 usb connecting the DS312 to my stereo for music, and another usb connecting the drive to my TV, and that’s it?
=>If you have enough usb ports that shouldn’t be a problem.
I’ve got a DS710+ and live in the US. I have have been following this blog post since last summer. I’d like to put my vote in for ATSC support for the Video Station / HDHomeRun.
I don’t use the “Prime” version (for cable). I have the HDHomeRun “Dual” which is for OTA broadcast signals and unencrypted cable channels only.
I’ve seen major strides in Synology over the past 2 years — Synology tries hard to deliver feature rich servers, and so far, I’m very pleased. Above everything else, for me personally, this is my most desired feature of the Synology.
With DSM 4.2 just around the corner, do you anticipate this feature to be released in the coming update?
Hi dbx,
I’m glad to hear you enjoy using your 710+.
I’m afraid I’m not so familiar with US tuners as I don’t live there: is the HD Homerun Dual the same as the this model (HDHR3 US)?
http://www.silicondust.com/products/models/hdhr3-us/
I believe you should be able to stream channels with the HDHR3 US (DSM 4.2 is required, it’s still in beta currently), though you cannot get the EPG displayed (this is currently a known limitation).
Do sent us your feedback/suggestions when you have time, it’s much appreciated.
Thanks
Hi Jeremief,
i’m one of the customers who pleeded for “HD Homerun” support (more specifically European DVB-C). Until now i’ve only read about DVB-T support, so I was overly excited about my blindtest of the Video Station Channel Scanning yesterday, which showed the following:
Tuner: HDHomeRun 0/1 (i could choose between the two tuners in my HDHomeRun (EU/AU/NZ) box)
Country: Europe (i guess this is for guide listings?)
Signal Type: Digital Cable (i could choose between Antenna and Cable)!! Perfect.
So my scan found almost everything on my digital cable (250 channels from YouSee provider) and later I was able to view live stream of some of the channels on my iphone, through the Video Station App. I were also able to view EPG/Guide Listings on 4 or 5 of my 250 channels, so it’s a start. The rest of the channels didn’t have any EPG. On one of the 4-5 channels with EPG i were able to schedule a recording which ended up in a folder on my NAS box. Perfect.
Did this functionality just come sneaking or why haven’t SiliconDust told anyone about it. Maybe because it’s a part of the Beta4.2? (which I have installed on my box).
Can you comment on this development or is it just a coincidence that there’s support for HD HomeRun now (DVB-C) ?
Thomas
PS: I know that IceTeaMan (on this blog) also have been arguing for this support, so he will probably also be very pleased.
Hi aggeren,
Thanks for the feedback.
HDHomerun support for DVB-T (HDR3 EU) was indeed announced with DSM 4.2 beta, and it will be officially listed as soon as DSM 4.2 goes live.
The HD Homerun is a bit different form other DVB-T dongles as it provides an API, which simply put, allows Video Station to communicate with it, and passes us quite a bit of the information directly. This is probably why you can see non DVB-T channels.
The same way, support for the North American version has started for streaming thanks to this specific design (whereas traditional ATSC sticks are not supported).
To any US/Canadian users trying out there HD Homnerun HDHR3 with DSM 4.2: you should be able to stream on the American version of the HDHomerun. The EPG (Electronic Programme guide) doesn’t scan, this is a known limitation.
Hi Jeremief,
thanks for your reply again.
Yes, DVB-T support has been announced with 4.2beta, but you actually could have annonced “partial support for DVB-C using HD Homerun API”
I just starred blindly on the “DVB-T support only” and would even try to scan for DVB-C channels. But i think you’re right, it’s possible because HD HOmerun API, probably don’t bother to differentiate between DVB-C and DVB-T when if offers channels to external program, like Video Station.
Cool for us with DVB-C.
There seem to be certain limitations though, like it finds 250 channels in my setup and only 4-5 are streamable, the others gives an timeout-error.
EPG does scan on these 4-5 channels, so I can see today’s program, and record from it. Can you tell more about how this is planned to work when 4.2 is officially released? Will there be a way to add en epg.xml path ourselves, so Video Station can extract EPG data through “XMLTV” example: http://en.timefor.tv/xmltv
I know other EPG-dependent systems have huge problems downloading the EPG from the different vendor/channels (supporting the differentiality), so maybe support for a “packaged EPG-XML” would be a needed feature? Any plans for this?
Since HD Homerun allows DVB-C channels to be scanned (disguised as DVB-T channels
) – will the planned support for EPG also fix the missing EPG on DVB-C channels (as long as we use HD Homerun)??
Thomas
Hi Jeremie,
do you have time for a comment on the EPG-development of Video Station? Is it fully supported in some parts of the world, or is it lacking all together? As I have tested several recording software (EyeTV, MCE, 4theRecord), i know that they all have problems with getting the correct EPG, if any. And it seems Video Station (at least in Denmark, Europe) has the same problem, mainly because our tv-vendors pack EPG information in a way not supported by the software.
By reading a XMLTV format file into these recording software products (they all support it – either directly or by plug-ins), I’ve got a full 14 day EPG for all my channels.
Is that something you would consider supporting? If you need access to a XML file, to see how it’s configured with channel imagelinks, channelnames and program/start/stop info, I can supply you with this.
Regards, Thomas
Hi Thomas,
Sorry for the late reply.
It’s sometimes difficult for us to tell the difference between EPG display problems which are due to a lack of info from the TV provider or bad signal… But the suggestion has been forwarded to our engineers.
I can’t give you a schedule for any implementation, but do feel welcome to send us some XMLTV samples, you can use this email:
product@synology.com
Thanks,
Jeremie
Hi Aggeren and Jeremief,
Please share the details on how you got the Danish EPG to work.
Best regards,
Peter
hi jeremy,
thanks for the update.
regarding the RJ45 cable, i already have the one ethernet connection point on my DS213 connected to my router, so that i can access it via my laptop. i guess that means i need to connect my router to the TV and go the wifi route? or can i use some kind of splitter?
thanks again for all your help.
Hi Bracque,
With the RJ45, you can either connect directly from NAS to TV (but that defeats the purpose of a NAS, it’s only if you have network problems), or connect both NAS and TV to the router as you mentioned.
Hope it works out fine!
Hi Jeremie
I just got my DS413 and installed Video station on it and start loading video’s ( MP4) but have some user questions
I have a lot of movies where I would like to set the poster but what is the URL syntax to point to a file on the video directory or is that not possible
Is there a way to mark video’s for not being reindexed I changed a lot and then by mistake did a reindex so had to redo all
I also have translated videos and TV recordings which are seen as movies in the searched database and then populated with info of a movie which is not correct and it is then hard to find which one it is
last question can you edit the database directly
sorry for all the questions
hope you can help me
thanks
Jaap
“I have a lot of movies where I would like to set the poster but what is the URL syntax to point to a file on the video directory or is that not possible”
=>most urls are possible, the easiest is to google it, click on the image you want and you get the url. It generally works. For example, this url will be taken by Video Station for “Les Miserables”
http://mediarray.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/les-miserables-poster1.jpg
You can also use the url from flickr for instance.., or photo station.
“Is there a way to mark video’s for not being reindexed I changed a lot and then by mistake did a reindex so had to redo all”
=>This isn’t possible, will forward the suggestion to our engineers. However, metadata might be available in the future with might be solve this issue.
“last question can you edit the database directly:”
=>I think I misunderstand your question: you can definitely edit it manually using “edit video info”, that’s where you were changing the poster (your first questions)
Hi Jeremie,
Maybe a basic question but … I bought a DS413j and the video station is very good for movie database.
Is it possible to benefit of these datas with a reader except with Windows ? It seems we can use it with android very soon but what about for other systems ?
Thanks
Tony
Hi Tony,
You can use Video Station on your PC, mac, and DS video is the version for mobile devices on: iOS, Android and Windows Phone.
http://www.synology.com.tw/dsm/home_mobile_support_ds_video.php?lang=enu
http://www.synology.com.tw/dsm/home_home_applications_video_station.php?lang=enu
I hope this helps.
Hi Jeremie,
First of all, thanks for a great product, referring to the Video Station here.
My problem is, that even thought in theory it all should be working flawlessly, I am pulling my hair as I have issues streaming from my Synology ds410 (with upgraded 1GB RAM) to iPad 4. Its kind of frustrating as I bought the iPad thinking I can do just this.
Setup and what I tried so far
All my movies are 1080p, sitting in the movie folder on the ds410
DSM is 4.2 and all software on both ds401 and other devices are the latest ones (no jailbarake)
The syndrom is that the movie playes for ca 10 sec, so stops for 2-3 and so starts again.. and so it goes..
Router is a Thompson TWG870 WIFI Modem, cant change this one as the ISP wont allow the usage of own routers.
Router setup and open ports screens can be found here
https://picasaweb.google.com/113073837646015733372/OpenPorts?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCIS4qaXW4Jy9pAE&feat=directlink
On Ipad I have tried all the different video settings (quality, transcoding, remuxing) but no help. I have also tried GPlayer but it keeps crashing so no use, or when not crashing a) doesn’t give me ANY sound, and b) even thought never really stopping, its “jumping” through the movie
Any ideas, suggestions? Is the DS410 not good enough to handle this kind of streaming?
Cheers,
t
PS 1: Plex player is not an option as it cant be instaled on the ds410 as far as I understand
PS 2: Have tried streaming to my iPhone 4s and same behavior…
Hi tradyan

Hi Jeremie,
Okidok, ill give it a try, lets see what they come back with
cheers,

Hey Jeremie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have now upgraded to DSM 4.2 and with all of your hard work, my US HD Homerun Prime works with my Synology. I am able to watch live TV via my VLC plugin in firefox, (chrome i can see the stream but the sound doesn’t work) but great stuff none the less. I am also able to view the stream via VLC on my desktop. I was also able to port forward the appropriate ports and my friend was able to watch my TV tuner from several states away using the standalone vlc. I am also able to use the disk station to record as a DVR. All of this is wonderful progress.
Now Video station is usable, now for my comments for improvements:
1) The programming guide does not show, now i am not blaming synology as the programming guide does not show on windows media center.
2) Once the Live Stream is active, changing channels is virtually impossible without stopping the stream, going back to the channel guide and starting a new live stream (kinda annoying).
3) Once you activate the live stream, you have to close the popup window and press the eye, which will launch a new window vlc window, the extra clicking and closing is annoying, and if i want to watch it with the stand a lone vlc, i have to open the live stream in the browser, wait for the tuner to turn on, then close the browser and open the stand a lone vlc.
thats about it, if i can think of any further improvements ill let you all know
Hi IceteaMan,
Glad to hear that even the HDHR Prime is working! Will be looking forward to any other impressions/suggestions in the future.
1)=> No EPG is a known limitation if you are in North America, I believe that’s the case?
2) & 3)=>Will forward these interface/usability improvements to our engineers
Regarding your other question, the DS210+ can’t transcode, only the following models can:
RS10613xs+, RS3413xs+, DS2413+, DS713+, DS3612xs, RS3412RPxs , RS3412xs, RS2212+, RS2212RP+, DS1812+, DS1512+, RS812RP+, RS812+, DS712+, DS412+, DS3611xs, RS3411RPxs, RS3411xs, RS2211RP+, RS2211+, DS2411+, DS1511+, DS411+II, DS411+, DS1010+, RS810RP+, RS810+, DS710+
http://www.synology.com/support/faq_show.php?lang=enu&q_id=577
I hope this helps.
Jeremie
Oh Yea, I am running DS 210+,
Also tried to see if i am able to view the tv stream from my samsung galaxy note, which also failed due to the note not supporting mpeg 2 format…. dunno if my model can do transcode?
Hi,
I was wondering if synology is planning to support Dvb-c devices with cam ci+ interface. I am living in the Netherlands. All channels on my cable are encrypted unfortunately.
ronald
Hi Ronald,
Thanks for your feedback, I will forward this info to our engineering team, however I’m afraid we don’t have a schedule for implementation at this stage.
Jeremie
Hi, just a question about the dlna streaming since the update.
I don’t believe anyone has got it working yet, at least according to the forum.
I have both iOS and android, I can chose the option to stream to my Samsung TV, which my device can see, but then nothing happens, the devices also just sit there with the coverpic and stop/pause icons.
If I do the same in Ds audio then the tv switches to disk station, and I can then use my device for something else.
This would be a great addition if it worked, hope you can do something with it.
I’m on ds212j by the way
Hi borospark,
Thank you for your feedback. Regarding the DLNA function, we generally detect the device without problem, but streaming may indeed not work with some models as their are too many TV models to test every single one.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our support engineers so this can be adapted for your Samsung model.
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
Thanks for your help.
jeremy, as always, thanks for the help.
one last question if you don’t mind… i have my NAS connected to the router, and my TV connected to the router. the NAS has antivirus and firewall, as does my computer. the TV has neither – do i need to worry about security with the TV hooked to the router?
i remember reading something a while back about hackers getting into people’s systems via the TV.
thanks.
Hi Bracque,
There could be a risk, since the NAS + computer + TV are all behind the router, you could use the firewall function of the router itself.
Jeremie
Hey Jeremie,
Love the Synology product – actually have 2 – a DS209 and a DS213air.
I just upgraded the DS209 to 4.2 – and started using DS Video. Fantastic product.
I have a few movies on it – in MP4 format – they work perfectly. What I am having issues with is the TV shows. Not an issue with playing them – but with organizing them on the site.
I am copying shows over as MP4s also. Each TV show has its own folder. They are showing up separately.
Main issue – if there are multiple episodes – they all seem to show up as Season 1 – Episode 3. I think this has to do with a setting that I initially made – attempting to setup a show as Season 1 – episode 3 – now it seems like the default when the shows are copied over is ALWAYS Season 1 – episode 3.
I had another issue – where a TV series was clearly two separate episodes – but no matter what I did – the DS Video felt they were the same exact show. When indexed – only one episode would show up – even though there were 2 separate files/episodes in the TV shows folder.
So my questions really have to do with something that someone asked earlier in the blog. How can I go about modifying the metadata of these shows. And specifically modify it BEFORE I copy it over to the DS Video folder I have setup for TV shows.
Does it have anything to do with the title of the file that is copied over. Are there some attributes or fields that I can fill in (via Windows properties) on each file – before I copy it to the DS – so each episode will show up more organized when the TV shows are indexed on the DS?
Any advice appreciated. Thanks again for a great product.
Hi Kstet,
Sorry for getting back to you late (hopefully not too late
“So my questions really have to do with something that someone asked earlier in the blog. How can I go about modifying the metadata of these shows. And specifically modify it BEFORE I copy it over to the DS Video folder I have setup for TV shows.”
=>Your correct, the file name is the important info for Video Station to do metadata retrieval online. As for how to modify the file name, check out this thread (or the Video Station help file) as it mentions the file naming conventions:
http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=222&t=59186&hilit=naming+convention
Note that Video Station will only look at the file name, any movie info retrieved is proper to the Video Station bata base. This means that your embedded movie info won’t be changed/erased, but will not be displayed.
If you still experience problems, don’t hesitate to contact our support team:

Jeremie
Good day!
I have a stick Aver Media Volar HD H830 (http://www.avermedia.com/product/ProductDetail.aspx?Id=501 ). It does not work with my DS (212j, 4.2-3202, VS 1.1-0229).
I live in Moscow (Russia). We can not buy a model from the list of compatible tuners. They simply are not available. The market in Russia there are very different models of tuners (http://market.yandex.ru/guru.xml?CMD=-RR=0,0,0,0-PF=2142622593~EQ~sel~x1716802895-PF=2142622592~EQ~sel~x1727292702-PF=2142622591~EQ~sel~x1658438147-PF=2142622591~EQ~sel~x279008123-PF=2142622564~TR~sel~select-VIS=8074-CAT_ID=2401072-EXC=1-PG=10&hid=91105). My model is the most popular. Models Aver Media that’s just start with the letter «A» in general are not sold here (For example: A815, A835, A850).
Earlier (pvieito, Posted July 17, 2012 at 8:16 PM) you have requested to add compatibility with the tuner H830. You promised to forward the request to the RD. I join in the request, and wait for implementation. All DS users in Russia will tell you “thank you” for that.
Sincerely,
Michael.
Hi Michael,
Apologies for a very belated reply, was away recently.
Regarding the Volar HD830, we already purchased it and have tested it, however, it is not compatible, this is due to the drivers.
I would encourage you -as well as any user wishing that we support this dongle- to contact AverMedia directly and let them know about this problem. If users contact the DVB-T stcick manufacturer directly and request this, it will make it easier for us when we contact them.
If you have any other dongles you would recommend for the Russian market, please let me know so I can either give you an update on their test/compatibility status, or forward them to our RD team to test.
Thanks
Jeremie
Thanks for the reply!
What kind of driver need to ask the manufacturer? Linux drivers are available.

Hi Jeremy,
I see that there are a lot of questions around the video station.
I have simple ones:
1. As you know sometimes a movie in the VOB format consist of many files. Video Station has problems seeing those VOB files as 1. e.g. MS media player is capable of handling those files in the same dir as 1.
2. If indexing goes wrong the edit option of video station on metadata is poor. If i want to change the poster I have to go to an URL why not ask me to go to a certain dir where i could have a picture etc. that is easier.
regards,
Gerhard
Hi Gerhard,
Sorry for my late response:
Regarding qst#2, I agree, it’s a small detail but will be very handy to manage the film posters.
Regarding #1, I’m not sure I fully get your question, you can write to the following email to give me more info/details:
product@synology.com
Thanks,
Jeremie
Hi Jeremie,
I have emailed you more than a week ago still no response.

Gerhard
Is it possible to connect an USB video grabber as well, for example the Elgato Video Capture, http://www.elgato.com/elgato/int/mainmenu/products/Video-Capture/product1.en.html?
Or is it possible with the Surveillance Station?
I have the 213 model.
Regards,
/Fredrik
Hi Frederik,
This device hasn’t been tested before, but I don’t think it will work.
What type of utilisation were you thinking of doing with it? (capturing from a vcr?)
Thanks,
Jeremie
Hi Jeremie,
I hear everyone talking about DVB-C and the fact that it is not supported yet.
Is it not supported because of the tuner-dongle (no drivers) or because of encrypting the signal?
I have fiberglass at home, and the TV signal is coming via an UNencrypted signal, meaning I don’t need any smartcard.
Only thing I have to set back home, is some parameters to mention the frequency and network ID.
If the dongle itself would be supported, then it would mean I can use it with my current connection.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Dave
Hi Dave,
Currently we haven’t integrated the drivers, so the dongles isn’t supported / detected at all.
Jeremie
Is there any way to schedule a recording using the command line? I want to use this for scripting.
Thanks!
Hi,
Here is an example:
STEP1: Insert the following into /var/packages/VideoStation/etc/dtvschedules/0dtv_schedule.json
{“channel”:”test”,”command”:4,”duration”:3600,”event_name”:”test_event”,”frequency”:533000000,”service_id”:100,”start_time”:1369742400,”status”:4,”text_name”:”text_name”,”uid”:”1024″},
=> This schedule will record the channel where “service id = 100″, “frequency = 533000000Hz” and for a total duration of 1 hour. “uid”: that’s the user ID, 1024 is for admin)
STEP2: And then call the daemon and set the signal with the following command:
$kill -SIGCHLD `cat /var/run/synodtv.pid`
Hope it helps
Hi Jeremie,
I’ve recently bought the DS213+ and use DS Video a lot for streaming video content to my Apple TV (with AirPlay). I really like the app!
Are these features not supported or am I doing something wrong?
- Stream DIVX, AVI to Apple TV
- Enable subtitles for Apple TV
- Index video/tv folder from the iPhone app
- Adjust subtitles that are out of sync
If they’re not supported…will they be in the next release?
Many thanks!
Elwyn
Hi Elwyn,
Glad to hear you are enjoying using DS video, to answer your questions:
- Stream DIVX, AVI to Apple TV
=> not with a DS213+ because it cannot transcode these formats, only .mp4, .m4v, .mov and .mkv
Here is more information about transcoding:
http://www.synology.com/support/faq_show.php?q_id=577&lang=enu
- Enable subtitles for Apple TV
You can stream subtitles to the Apple TV if you are using the “remote mode” which is accessible from the movie info page. If you stream through Airplay (accessible in the player), subtitles won’t be streamed, this is a limitation due to Apple who implement Airplay.
- Index video/tv folder from the iPhone app
=> It’s not possible currently, but I’ll note it as a request
- Adjust subtitles that are out of sync
=> It’s not possible currently, I’d recommend you contact our support team about this issue so we can look into it:
https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php?lang=enu
Thanks,
Hi Jeremie,
